Position overview
Clinical Forensic Medical Service (CFMS) comprises 3 services – Forensic and Medical Sexual Assault Care (FAMSAC), Clinical Forensics ACT (CFACT) and Fitness to Drive Unit (FTDU). Care is provided across all three services by Forensic Nurse Examiners (FNEs).
- FAMSAC provides a specialist service encompassing forensic evidence collection, medical assessments and follow-up care adult and adolescent victims of sexual assault.
- CFACT operates under a contractual arrangement between ACT Health and the Australian Federal Police (AFP), ACT Policing. The FNE provides triage and support services, along with providing medical care and management to those in police custody at the city watch house, and assessments to police officers with minor injuries or occupational exposures sustained while on duty.
- Cognitive screening and associated assessments in the outpatient Fitness to Drive Medical Clinic (FTDMC).
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Advanced consumer focused clinical nursing assessments with minimal supervision to consumers of varying complexity across FAMSAC, CFACT and FTDMC.
- High-quality health care and customer service, with the ability to build rapport with external stakeholders and challenging consumers.
- Collaborating with other healthcare and non-healthcare related professionals to provide coordinated care.
- Effective and professional written and verbal communication skills in a diverse range of situations, using consistent and transparent processes.
- Actively participate in, and promote a culture, of continuous quality improvement, policy development and clinical research within the department.
- Maintain professional development through formal and informal training.
- Support education within the speciality through facilitation of competency-based nursing practice as per the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) guidelines and other specialty specific competency practice guidelines.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Tertiary qualification in nursing or related qualification in a relevant field and/or a willingness to undertake further study in forensic nursing.
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Current driver’s license.
- Eligible to hold and maintain a baseline AFP security clearance.
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Four years fulltime equivalent working professionally in a similar role, or relevant role and role environment.
Desirable
- Prior experience in forensic nursing, sexual health, emergency nursing or Drug and Alcohol.
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.
