Position overview
The CHS Cardiology Service provides inpatient and outpatient care to people with cardiovascular issues across the ACT. The Cardiology Service has been developing a specialised Heart Team that includes a multi-disciplinary team of professionals with expertise in the assessment and treatment of patients with valvular heart disease.
The TAVI and Structural Heart Co-ordinator role is highly rewarding and demands flexibility and adaptability to manage changes within the service. The successful candidate will be pivotal in the operational management of the service and will provide expert nursing support. They must possess strong leadership abilities, advanced clinical knowledge, and experience in overseeing clinical governance systems, driving quality improvement initiatives, and engaging in research activities.
The TAVI CNC role operates Monday to Friday and will be offered as a two-day-per-week position under a job-share arrangement.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Under limited direction from the CNC, you will:
- Provide evidence-based, patient centred care for patients and their families that supports the delivery of the TAVI pathway, including care coordination across health settings – for example, outpatient treatments, inpatient visits, diagnostic tests.
- Provide waitlist management, pre- and post- procedure nurse led clinics as required to achieve access to timely and appropriate referrals and appointments. Maintain data base, audit and report systems as required.
- Work alongside the TAVI RN3.1, providing specialist knowledge and advice to nursing and allied health staff working within the heart team.
- Provide leadership within the structural heart team to continue to develop the service both operationally and in terms of clinical governance.
- Provide leadership to other health professionals involved in the care of patients in the TAVI program, including education for staff.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders including cardiologists, cardiac scientists, Cardiac Catheter Laboratory (CCL), Acute Coronary Care Unit (ACCU), cardiothoracic surgeons.
- Undertake professional development to stay abreast of national and international changes that may impact on the care of patients and provide advice that may impact on the strategic plans for TAVI treatment.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team and education meetings and discussions on treatment modalities, protocols, management and supportive care for patients.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Tertiary Qualification in nursing.
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable
- Post graduate qualification in nursing relating to cardiovascular nursing.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Minimum five years’ fulltime equivalent experience working professionally in nursing.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
Desirable
- Prior experience in or knowledge around this area of nursing will be highly desirable but not essential.
Prior to commencement
- Reference checks and confirmation of registration with Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Agency (AHPRA).
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
- Undergo a pre-employment Police Check.

- Proven competence in the clinical assessment of patients with cardiac disease who are referred for TAVI, utilizing the nursing process and incorporating a risk assessment approach while working within the professional legislation, policies and procedures.
- High level interpersonal skills with a proven ability to provide leadership to and work as part of a multidisciplinary team to achieve the coordination of complex care for patients and their families.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with internal and external stakeholders. This includes providing education to staff, patients and their families utilizing appropriate methods and tools.
- An understanding of the issues confronting people with acute and chronic illnesses and the ability to implement changes that improve outcomes for patients.
- Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards; work health and safety (WH&S); and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
