The Gastroenterology & Hepatology Unit (GEHU), based at The Canberra Hospital campus, provides services to both inpatients and outpatients and consists of an endoscopy unit and outpatient clinics.The GEHU provides a range of gastroenterological interventional and diagnostic services including, but not limited to, gastroscopy, colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogram, endoscopic ultrasounds, and an Anorectal manometry service. The outpatient clinics include the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) service, liver disease service, and National Bowel Cancer Screening program.

One of the key roles of the GEHU Clinical Coordinator is to assist in further developing and running advanced endoscopy services in close liaison with the Clinical Director of GEHU and other advanced endoscopists. The role also involves active participation in the planning, design, and implementation of infrastructure upgrades of the endoscopy suites.

In addition, the GEHU Clinical Coordinator provides clinical leadership and coordinates the day-to-day activities of the Unit, including advanced clinical assessment and patient care, coordination of clinics, and management of procedural lists. The role leads the nursing team to ensure safe and efficient patient flow, oversees the management of scope inventory, repair processes, and unit stock, and manages the ordering of specialised supplies and equipment to meet operational needs while liaising with the multidisciplinary team.

The Clinical Coordinator also plays a key role in developing and nurturing a nursing team with the appropriate skills to deliver specialised gastroenterology and hepatology care. Furthermore, the Clinical Coordinator works collaboratively with other advanced practice nurses to ensure the delivery of evidence-based care to all patients.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Under limited direction of the Clinical Nurse Consultant, you will lead the nursing team to deliver safe and efficient patient care. You will:

  1. Provide coordination and leadership to the nursing team in the day to day running of the unit, using advanced problem-solving skills to ensure efficient patient flow is achieved throughput the unit.
  2. Work closely with the multidisciplinary team including doctors, Central Reprocessing Unit staff, administrative staff and others to ensure best outcomes for patients.
  3. Provide clinical oversight and leadership in gastroenterology procedures including gastroscopy, colonoscopy (diagnostic and therapeutic), EUS, ERCP, ESD as well as bronchoscopy and EBUS.
  4. Work with the CNC and CDN to build and sustain a nursing team which is appropriately skilled to assist with complex and evolving gastroscopy procedures, including working individually with nurses to develop the required technical skills
  5. Coordinate and oversee supplies to ensure appropriate supply to meet operational demands while meeting budgetary requirements (including ordering through PICS and liaising directly with suppliers as necessary)
  6. Assist the CNC to lead quality activities under the National Standards and Colonoscopy Care standard, including auditing, quality improvement, risk management and data collection.
  7. The endoscopy unit is undergoing expansion and will be introducing additional complex procedures. The candidate will be required to actively participate in the establishment, development, and ongoing delivery of these services.
  8. This role will require the candidate to be actively involved in setting up and running these services.
  9. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.
