Position overview
The Division of Cancer & Ambulatory Support provides a comprehensive range of cancer screening, assessment, diagnostic and treatment services and palliative care through inpatient, outpatient and community settings. The Division is also responsible for the support functions for organisational ambulatory care including the Central Intake team, central outpatients and transcription.
Cancer services are divided into five clinical streams: Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Haematology, Immunology and Palliative Care.
The Clinical Nurse Consultant for Palliative and Cancer Supportive Care is responsible for providing an effective, efficient and contemporary leadership to the Palliative and Cancer Supportive Care Teams and ensuring the provision of a support service to people and their families undergoing cancer treatment from a new diagnosis to end of life care. The teams comprise highly skilled nurses, social workers and psychologists providing services to people in the hospital, as outpatients and in the community.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Under limited direction of the Assistant Director of Nursing – inpatient services you will:
- Provide expert advice, professional support, contemporary management and model leadership to the interdisciplinary team as part of Cancer & Ambulatory Support Division including;
- Fostering an environment which actively encourages the development of expert nursing, psychology and social work skills and professional development within the area
- Supporting a positive workplace culture and environment.
- Provide leadership for the development, management, reporting and evaluation of team activity against targets and governance requirements, and is responsible and accountable for the allocation and reporting of financial, human and material resources.
- Lead, initiate, develop, implement and evaluate work processes and clinical practice standards, policies and standard operating procedures with professional leads, senior management, staff and consumers relevant to the clinical area and within CAS and Canberra Health Services governance frameworks
- Develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with relevant providers to provide safe, effective and high-quality services and meet funding agreement requirements.
- Ensure adequate clinical supervision is in place for individuals and teams as required.
- Collaborate, initiate, support and participate in the development of quality improvement, policy and strategic service plans, risk management and research activities. Ensure that these are implemented and evaluated in consultation with Assistant Director of Nursing CAS.
- Comply with and report against the required KPIs in relation to Workplace Safety, Workplace Diversity and Industrial Democracy principle and practices. Commitment to the values of Canberra Health Services.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to the level of classification which contribute to the operate of the section.

Essential
- Tertiary qualification in nursing
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable
- Post graduate qualification in nursing management or leadership
Experience
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Minimum of 5 years’ work experience in a nursing role
- Experience in nursing leadership
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, and all other related frameworks.
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.
