Position overview
Ward 8B is a busy 12‑bed renal ward providing inpatient care to individuals with renal dysfunction and related complications. The ward has the capacity to expand to 28 beds during periods of organisational demand and regularly supports patients from a variety of specialties across CHS, including cardiology, neurology, respiratory, and general medicine.
The RN3.1 Clinical Care Coordinator plays a key role in managing day‑to‑day patient flow across Ward 8B. This includes ensuring timely patient assessment, coordinating referrals to multidisciplinary teams, community services, external stakeholders, and Renal Dialysis Units across the Renal Network to support safe, effective, and well‑planned discharges.
The successful applicant will efficiently manage patient flow, lead quality improvement activities, and coordinate—alongside the CNC—the delivery of care to patients from multiple specialties. They will also educate, support, and guide both new and existing staff to ensure the consistent delivery of high‑quality, person‑centred care.
This is a full‑time, Monday‑to‑Friday position worked during business hours. Temporary with possibility of extension and or permanency.
Key responsibilities
Under the limited direction of the Clinical Nurse Consultant, your responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Contribute to the daily coordination of the acute renal ward, supporting safe, person‑centred, high‑quality care within the approved clinical scope.
- Assist CNC with the effective use of human, financial, and material resources, supporting the achievement of service levels and helping monitor and report on ward performance.
- Support clinical governance activities, standards of care, and service planning, contributing to accreditation processes and ensuring practice aligns with the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHSS).
- Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to support and participate in change management initiatives that align with the strategic objectives of the Renal Service and Canberra Health Services.
- Provide guidance, support, and mentorship to nursing staff, helping foster a culture of professional development, innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Participate in the development, review, and implementation of clinical guidelines, procedures, and policies to support evidence‑based practice consistent with CHS strategic goals and NSQHSS requirements.
- Assist in monitoring key performance indicators, activity data, and quality metrics, contributing to reporting processes and supporting the implementation of management actions to improve patient and service outcomes.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Desirable
- Hold or working towards a post graduate qualification in the field of renal nursing.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- A minimum 5 years’ full time equivalent experience in acute clinical practice, incorporating specialised renal nursing care.
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, and all other related frameworks.
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.
