The Division of Women, Youth and Children (WYC) offers a range of primary, secondary and tertiary services across the acute and community-based sectors. The Centenary Hospital for Women and Children (CHWC) is a tertiary centre providing specialised paediatric (non-tertiary) and neonatology services for the ACT and surrounding regional areas.

The Paediatric Child and Adolescent Short Stay Service (CASSS) is a combined hybrid model of care encompassing the Paediatric Day Stay (PDS) Unit and Child and Adolescent Hospital in the Home Service (CA-HITH). The PDS services include a rapid flow day stay elective and emergency surgical procedures: pre and post-operative care, as well as medical services such as oncology, haematology, rheumatology, immunology, sedation for procedures, endocrine dynamic testing. The Child and Adolescent Hospital in the Home (CA-HITH) is a hospital replacement service that provides hospital-level care for children within the comfort of their own home, rather than in a hospital ward.

The Registered Nurse Level 2 will provide complex clinical care to patients with a variety of medical and surgical conditions within CA-HITH. This includes working independently to provide clinical care to patients in their homes, conducting advanced clinical assessments, applying critical thinking skills, supporting and guiding junior nursing staff, troubleshooting, and coordinating the complex care needs of patients within the service. Staff work as part of a comprehensive multidisciplinary team and this position will be required to escalate concerns to medical staff as needed within a timely manner. Within PDS, the Registered Nurse Level 2 will provide care to medical and surgical patients receiving care and/or treatment in the PDS. This includes working as part of a team to ensure safe and efficient care, including supporting junior staff in the management of patients with complex and chronic conditions.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

Under limited direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager, you will:

  • Provides direct patient care to patients referred to the CASSS, within an ethical and professional framework, using innovative and evidence-based nursing practice.
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately (orally, non-verbally and in writing) in a diverse range of situations, using consistent and transparent processes.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for patients, including patient education on complex health needs. Work collaboratively with other members of the multidisciplinary team to achieve planned clinical patient outcomes.
  • Participate in, contribute to, and deliver professional development programs. Actively promote a culture of continuous quality improvement, policy development and clinical research that is evidence based in accordance with the CHS Quality and Clinical Governance Framework.
  • Work in partnership with families, Clinical Nurse Manager’s and the multidisciplinary team to develop and maintain effective networks with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Promote and support high-quality health outcomes by participating in policy development, education and research within a quality framework that aligns with the National Safety and Quality Services (NSQHS) standards.
  • Work within current legislative guidelines and appropriately model a commitment to Canberra Health Services Values and the provision of a safe working environment.

  • Child & Adolescent - Hosdpital in the home (HITH) operates 7 days per week, morning and evenings.
