Justice Health Services (JHS) is a unit of the Mental Health, Justice Health, and Alcohol & Drug

Services (MHJHADS) Division of Canberra Health Services. It is a contemporary evidence-based service that provides high quality health care to people involved in the criminal justice system. The service aims to provide collaborative, equitable, comprehensive holistic health care that involves the patient and other key stakeholders and services.

JHS provides primary health services and specialist mental health services to people in the criminal justice system in a range of settings including the courts, custody, youth detention and community settings. Custodial Health – Primary Health provides primary, drug and alcohol, complex, and population healthcare services to people in custody and facilitates access to specialist and allied health services, while Custodial Mental Health provides mental health screening, psychiatry services, and crisis mental health services to people in custody.

The Registered Nurse role at this level is responsible for the provision of sound, clinical primary healthcare services and interventions to clients of Justice Health Services at AMC and BYJC. This includes participation in quality management and improvement initiatives to promote optimal service delivery, and the maintenance of professional competencies. The Registered Nurse position is supported by a cohesive and multi-disciplinary team.

This position will be required to work across multiple sites, participate in overtime, and work a full rotating roster.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Under limited direction of relevant senior clinicians, you will perform duties as a member of a multi-disciplinary team across both AMC and BYJC. You will:

  • Provide comprehensive knowledge and assessment skills to make effective clinical decisions, develop patient care plans, and evaluate outcomes of own practice.
  • Initiate baseline and screening tests, conduct induction and health assessments, complete referrals, triage cases, and effectively engage with external stakeholders and the multi-disciplinary team to ensure coordinated care.
  • Identify and contribute to risk management, quality improvement, nursing practice review, and clinical research activities.
  • Accept accountability and responsibility for own actions and decisions within the scope of practice for a registered nurse.
  • Comply with the relevant legislation, code of ethics, codes of practice and the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council National Competency Standards.
  • Maintain required clinical core competencies and skills, accessing appropriate education and staff development opportunities, ensuring you practice within a professional scope of practice.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

  • Tertiary Qualification or related qualification in Nursing
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

  • Prior experience in Comprehensive Health Assessments and or conducting initial and ongoing assessments to identify health needs, risks, and priorities will be highly desirable.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.
