The Nursing & Midwifery Workforce Unit (NMWU) plays a pivotal role in shaping, supporting and sustaining the Nursing and Midwifery workforce across Canberra Health Services. The NMWU is central to delivering the workforce capability required for this transformational change.

This position provides high‑level administrative leadership, recruitment coordination and operational management to ensure the smooth and effective functioning of the Unit. Working closely with the Nurse Manager, the role collaborates closely with the administration team, manages key human and administrative resources, and strengthens governance processes aligned with CHS business plans and national quality standards. It is responsible for developing and maintaining robust policies, procedures and business rules that support consistent, safe and efficient recruitment practices across the Nursing and Midwifery workforce. With a strong focus on collaboration and service excellence, the role champions CHS values, fosters a cohesive team culture and contributes to the overall performance and strategic objectives of the Division.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

  • Lead and coordinate Nursing and Midwifery workforce initiatives, including recruitment, workforce data analysis, benchmarking, exit interview programs and targeted recruitment strategies to support workforce planning, improve recruitment outcomes and promote workforce sustainability.
  • Use research, policy and workforce data to support Nursing and Midwifery workforce initiatives, ensuring compliance with professional, legislative and organisational requirements. Contribute to improving recruitment processes, workforce planning, skill mix and appointment pathways through data analysis, reporting and service improvement activities.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation and monitoring of governance processes that support the delivery of services with accountability, transparency and consistency, ensuring alignment with CHS business plans, organisational priorities and the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards.
  • Develop and maintain recruitment processes, workforce systems and procedures that support efficient, consistent and contemporary workforce practices across Nursing and Midwifery services. This includes identifying gaps, streamlining workflows, supporting and leading quality improvement projects, and embedding best-practice approaches.
  • Promote a collaborative, values-driven team culture aligned with the CHS Values, ensuring all interactions with internal and external stakeholders reflect professionalism, respect and a commitment to excellent customer service. Demonstrate excellent communication skills and build effective working relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
