Position overview
The Infection Prevention and Control Unit is a multidisciplinary team, working with the infectious diseases and clinical microbiology departments to minimise infection risks for patients, health care workers, and visitors.
The team strives for excellence through ongoing programs including education, policy development and review, surveillance of healthcare associated infections, outbreak management and promotion of hand-hygiene and other infection prevention and control strategies.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Demonstrate advanced specialist knowledge, experience and clinical skills in infection prevention and control.
- Demonstrate critical thinking, problem-solving skills and clinical judgement in relation to infection prevention and control.
- Professional development of self and others utilising contemporary practice in the delivery of standards of care.
- Work across professional and organisational boundaries to influence health service and/or professional outcomes in relation to infection prevention and control.
- Participate directly and/or indirectly in the delivery of clinical care, act as a clinical resource, advisor and technical expert, in relation to infection prevention and control.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- A tertiary qualification in nursing.
- Be registered or have applied for registration as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Hold a current driver’s licence
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Postgraduate qualification in infection prevention and control or other relevant field
- Be a financial member of the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control (ACIPC)
Experience
Specific experience includes, but is not limited to, the following.
Essential
- A minimum four years fulltime equivalent experience as a registered nurse.
Desirable
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.
- Pre-employment National Police Check.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
