Position overview
The Central Outpatient Department (COPD) at Canberra Hospital sits within the Division of Cancer and Ambulatory Support (CAS), providing clinic-based care to a wide variety of medical and surgical specialties. Nursing staff work across medical and surgical services including neurology, neurosurgery, endocrinology, general medicine, rheumatology, dermatology, infectious diseases, orthopaedics, plastics, vascular, urology, ear nose & throat and oral and maxillofacial.
The COPD Clinical Development Nurse works collaboratively across the unit to provide education, training, clinical leadership and mentoring to new and existing staff. The CDN is responsible for facilitating ongoing learning and developmental opportunities to uphold a high level of quality and evidence-based knowledge and skills, whilst also providing skill-based teachings and assessments across the differing specialties.
Furthermore, the CDN is responsible for the continuation of quality improvement initiatives to support staff and ensure the delivery of patient centered and evidence informed high quality nursing care.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Utilise adult learning principles to conduct clinical teachings and competency-based assessments to ensure staff maintain mandatory and essential training, in line with standards for practice and CHS policy and procedural guidelines
- Work collaboratively with team members to identify learning needs and enhance clinical skills, expertise and professional development within the Outpatients setting
- Facilitate the provision of a supportive, positive, and opportunistic learning environment for students, new graduate, temporary/casual and permanent staff members in the Outpatients Department
- Maintain a high level of interpersonal and communication skills to work in concordance with the unit’s multidisciplinary teams and facilitate appropriate patient assessment, education, and care planning
- Provide support through the facilitation of structured reflective, feedback and/or debriefing sessions amongst individual or staffing groups
- In collaboration with Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM), assist with review and development of clinical policies, education, procedures, and practices which contribute to the delivery of high-quality care. Provide leadership and mentorship to RN2, RN1, and ENs in the team
- Facilitate evidence-based quality improvement activities that reflect the changing trends in medical & surgical Outpatient service delivery and align with the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Tertiary Qualification in Nursing
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable
- Relevant tertiary qualification (or equivalent) in clinical teaching and assessment or post graduate qualifications in nursing or clinical education
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific experience includes, but is not limited to, the following.
Essential
- A minimum four years full time equivalent as a registered nurse.
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, and all other related frameworks.
Desirable
- Prior experience as a Clinical Development Nurse will be highly desirable
- Prior experience in advanced wound care that is transferrable to a variety of medical and surgical specialties and/or prior experience in Orthopedics is highly desirable
- Completed the Tissue Viability Program
