An exciting opportunity is available for an enthusiastic and suitably qualified Registered Nurse to join the Tuberculosis (TB) Service within the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine (DRSM).
Our service is based at the Canberra Hospital and Health Services campus and provides comprehensive TB management for both inpatients and outpatients. The department also delivers a broad range of specialist respiratory services, including but not limited to: Cystic Fibrosis (CF), Bronchiectasis, Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), Sleep Disorders, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and other Advanced Airway Diseases, Asthma and General Respiratory Medicine
Under the limited direction of the Clinical Nurse Consultant, you will work closely with TB medical specialists to provide high quality, patient centred care. Key responsibilities include: Case management of tuberculosis disease and infection, delivery of TB education to patients, staff, and stakeholders, Participation in public health responses, including contact tracing, Data collection and reporting, TB screening for staff and students, Administration of BCG immunisation, Assessment and management of immigration and recently arrived refugee referred clients
Comprehensive training and support will be provided to enable you to develop and master the specialised skills required for this role.
Key responsibilities
- Provide person‑centred care to patients and their families undergoing tuberculosis‑related treatment, ensuring care is culturally sensitive, supportive, and evidence based.
- Undertake BCG vaccination, TB screening, and timely follow‑up of results, including participation in the public health response and contact tracing for notified cases.
- Deliver a coordinated case management approach for patients with tuberculosis in both inpatient and outpatient settings, including the provision of Directly Observed Therapy (DOTS).
- Liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including multidisciplinary teams, public health units, and community services, to ensure TB service delivery is coordinated, accessible, and maintained.
- Actively participate in professional development and provide individual and group TB education to patients, staff, and community groups across hospital and community settings.
- Provide clinical leadership and supervision to new and less experienced staff, supporting skill development and safe clinical practice.
- Actively contribute to and implement quality improvement initiatives, assist in the development and review of policies and procedures in line with current best practice and evidence‑based research.
- Assist in the delivery of nursing services within the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, including Medical Officer Clinics, Asthma Service, Cystic Fibrosis, and general respiratory outpatient services as required.
- Undertake other duties as directed, within the approved scope of clinical practice, ensuring the delivery of safe, high‑quality, person‑ and family‑centred care at all times.

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Relevant tertiary nursing qualification
- Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- A minimum 4 years’ fulltime equivalent work in an acute care setting
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, and all other related frameworks.
Desirable
- Prior experience in respiratory nursing, public health or Infectious disease management
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.

- Demonstrated experience as a Registered Nurse providing high‑quality, evidence‑based care in TB services and/or related clinical settings such as respiratory health, infectious diseases, or public health, with well‑developed clinical judgement and the ability to adapt and apply expertise to the complexities of tuberculosis care
- Demonstrated ability to provide high‑quality, person‑ and family‑centred care to patients and carers from diverse cultural, social, and linguistic backgrounds. Proven experience in patient and carer education, health promotion, and supporting individuals through complex or prolonged treatment pathways.
- Demonstrated high‑level oral and written communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with medical staff, multidisciplinary team members, external organisations, and the general public.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement activities, clinical governance, and evidence‑based practice.
- Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work Health and Safety and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
