Position overview

The Department of Neonatology is the only tertiary level 6 neonatal unit in the ACT and surrounding NSW. It includes Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Special Care Nursery (SCN), ACT NETS, Newborn and Parent Support Service and NICU Growth and Development Clinic. NICU and SCN currently have 39 funded beds. There are approximately 3,800 births per year with 700 neonatal admissions to the department. The facility offers individualised family centred care in a developmentally appropriate and technologically state-of-the-art environment.

The Enrolled Nurse is to work in SCN, a family centred and developmental care focused unit, supporting direct patient care, to achieve excellent outcomes for the neonates and families. Working under supervision of Registered Nurses (RN), you will be supported by our Clinical Support Nurse and Clinical Development Nurses.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Under limited direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager, you will perform the role of EN you will:

  • Provide direct neonatal care under the supervision of a RN within an ethical and professional framework in the SCN environment.
  • Practice in accordance with the relevant legislation.
  • Practice in a way that acknowledges the dignity, culture, values, beliefs & rights of individuals & or groups.
  • Understand and practice within own scope of practice.
  • Integrate nursing and health care knowledge, skills & attitudes to provide safe & effective neonatal nursing care.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Competencies

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Work under direct or indirect supervision of an RN to provide neonatal nursing care in SCN, within scope of practice of an EN.
  • Provide direct and indirect neonatal nursing care, engage in reflective and analytical practice, and demonstrate professional and collaborative practice.
  • Maintain active participation within the multidisciplinary team, contributing to patient care planning.
  • Seek assistance and support in decision making from an RN regarding delegated work.
  • Adhere to established guidelines, protocols, procedures, standards, and systems of work as set out by the organisation and local practices.
  • Engage in incident reporting and participate in quality improvement activities to promote safe, and/or rectify unsafe, practices.
  • Provide support to new and less experienced staff, including nursing students.
  • Understand and apply obligations for risk identification and safe practice within the clinical practice environment under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act 2011

Qualifications

  • Be registered as an Enrolled Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
