Position overview

The Division of Surgery (DoS) is responsible for delivering services to inpatients and outpatients in the following specialties: ACT Trauma Service, Anaesthetics, Intensive Care Unit, Peri-Operative Unit, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Urology, Cardio-thoracic, Orthopaedics, Plastics, Otolaryngology, Maxillofacial, Acute Surgical Unit, Surgical Bookings and Pre-Admission Clinic, Ophthalmology and Pain Management Service.

The medical emergency team (MET) works in collaboration with medical and nursing staff from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Emergency Department (ED) and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to provide a rapid response and assessment, management and follow up review of patients requiring a medical emergency response or who are at risk of acute deterioration across the Canberra Hospital (CH) campus.

The Rapid Response service within MET aims to reduce the number of MET calls through the early identification, referral and management of patient deterioration. This is the first step in a staged approach to establishing a nurse-led MET response through the introduction of Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) roles within the MET.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

  • Provide strong leadership for nurses in all aspects of clinical practice and models of care including planning, implementing, and evaluating professional development, managing education, research, teaching, workforce planning and a quality work environment for the MET and ERDP teams.
  • Accountable for the flexible allocation of human, financial and material resources within the MET and ERDP to ensure achievement of an agreed level of service and reporting of variances against agreed targets.
  • Provide clinical governance leadership and participate in the development, maintenance and review of clinical standards, policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Lead, coordinate and work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team to facilitate change management activities to achieve the NSQHSS in particular the Recognising and Responding to Acute Deterioration standard.
  • Monitor relevant Key Performance Indicators, quality data and formulate appropriate management plans to achieve these.
  • Work collaboratively and in partnership with Nursing and Midwifery staff from across Canberra Hospital to ensure a high level of quality patient care and outcomes.
  • Ensure the provisions of a safe environment for patients and staff ensuring Infection Control and Work, Health and Safety guidelines are followed. Including actively promoting and maintaining a harmonious working relationship between all members of the health care team and support staff.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.
