Position overview
The Cancer Diagnosis Nurse Navigator will be the key point of contact for patients being evaluated for a suspected cancer diagnosis through the Integrated Cancer Diagnosis Clinic (CDX). As part of a multidisciplinary specialist team, you will triage and support individuals being supported and managed through CDX, tracking patient requirements from acceptance through to MDT review and until definitive diagnosis, liaising with clinicians in speciality areas, providing patient support and education, and identifying logistical or psychosocial barriers to care.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Provide clinical coordination and navigation for patients being evaluated through CDX, tracking and managing clinical requirements from acceptance until definitive diagnosis in collaboration with the multidisciplinary medical team
- Oversee referral triage, reviewing incoming referrals to ensure patients meet eligibility criteria
- Identify and access appropriate cancer diagnosis pathways based on an individual’s clinical needs, in consultation with the multidisciplinary medical team
- Provide patient information and education, providing patients and carers with clear, digestible information regarding upcoming procedures and the path to definitive diagnosis.
- Coordinate and facilitate support for individuals through the CDX evaluation process, in consultation with the multidisciplinary team, identifying and addressing any psychosocial and logistical barriers to care and coordinating symptom management during the evaluation process.
- Liaise with individuals, families, carers, and health professionals and others who may be involved in the provision of services to individuals being evaluated through CDX.
- Provide appropriate cancer diagnosis services and resources for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
- Provide individualised and appropriate cancer diagnosis support in different modalities including telephone, email, Telehealth and face-to-face.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Tertiary qualification in nursing and eligible for registration in the category of Registered Nurse by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
Desirable
- Post graduate qualification in a relevant area
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
Essential
- Minimum 5 years post qualification experience working professionally as a registered nurse with at least 3 years recent fulltime experience in primary health care, general medicine, oncology, haematology, or other relevant clinical fields.
Desirable
- Prior experience in cancer diagnosis or the provision of cancer care.
- Experience in developing local procedures and policies.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.
- Pre-employment National Police Check.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
- Comply with CHS credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for allied health professionals.
