Position overview

The Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at CHS provides care for patients admitted from the ACT and South Eastern region of NSW. Diagnoses include ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) for primary intervention (24hour, 7 days a week service); Acute Coronary Syndrome for angiography plus or minus intervention; arrhythmias, heart failure and elective procedures. CCU works closely with the Cardiac Catheter lab, Cardiac Rehabilitation team and Cardiac Technicians, and has a cohesive and cooperative working relationship with our Cardiologists and Registrars. CCU is committed to the training, education and support of its staff members as well as undergraduate and new graduate nurses. including cardiac implantable devices, cardioversion, and PCI.

As the Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) it is expected that you will provide under limited supervisions of the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) high quality, patient-centred nursing care to individuals with acute cardiac conditions. This position oversees the daily clinical operations of the ACCU, providing direct supervision to nursing staff, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration, ensuring adherence to evidence-based practice and national standards.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Under limited direction of the ADON you will perform the role of ACCU CNC with duties as below.

You will:

  • Provide strong clinical leadership to ensure delivery of safe, evidence-based care for patients with acute coronary syndromes and complex cardiac conditions.
  • Lead clinical governance activities, including incident review, monitoring clinical outcomes and key performance indicators (KPI’s), and evaluation of quality improvement initiatives in alignment with the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards.
  • Ensure nursing staff maintain required competencies in acute cardiac care, including advanced life support and cardiac monitoring and provide leadership to foster a positive, accountable, and high performing team culture.
  • Be accountable for the effective allocation and management of human, financial and material resources to achieve agreed service levels and report variances against performance targets.
  • Work collaboratively with cardiologists and medical officers, allied health, the cardiac catheterisation laboratory, ward teams and patient flow services to promote effective communication, coordinated care, and service planning across the patient journey.
  • Ensure the provisions of a safe environment for patients and staff ensuring Infection Control and Work, Health and Safety guidelines are followed. Including actively promoting and maintaining a harmonious working relationship between all members of the health care team and support staff.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

  • Registered or eligible for registration with the National Nursing and Midwifery Board through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
