Position overview
The Central Outpatient Department (COPD) at Canberra Hospital sits within the Division of Cancer and Ambulatory Support (CAS), providing clinic-based care to a wide variety of medical and surgical specialties. Nursing staff work across medical and surgical services including neurology, neurosurgery, endocrinology, general medicine, rheumatology, dermatology, infectious diseases, orthopaedics, plastics, vascular, urology, ear nose & throat and oral and maxillofacial. Alongside the Registered Nurse Level 2’s who have a focus on one or more specialities, the primary focus for this position is to provide support, leadership and guidance to all services supported within the Central Outpatient Department.
Under the supervision of the Clinical Nurse Manager, the Central Outpatients Registered Nurse Level 2 (RN2) role is to work alongside clinicians and key stakeholders to coordinate safe, effective, and timely access to care. This role will support the services by triaging referrals, managing clinic schedules, supporting staff and act as a role model to promote evidence-based practice. The role requires excellent communication skills to work in concordance with the multidisciplinary team. Clinic schedules primarily run from Monday to Friday from 0800-1800, although some after-hours work may be required.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Work collaboratively with team members to identify learning needs and enhance clinical skills, expertise and professional development within the ambulatory setting
- As required, facilitate patient flow of clinics through timely review of clinical lists and ensuring pre-appointment readiness for patients requiring initial and follow up appointments
- Assist with the collection, collation and analysis of data to evaluate patient outcomes, service demand and facilitate appropriate patient access to timely care
- Maintain a high level of interpersonal and communicational skills to work in concordance with the unit’s multidisciplinary teams and facilitate appropriate patient assessment, education, and care planning.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to Registered Nurses Level 1, Enrolled Nurses, new graduates and students to facilitate the provision of a supportive, positive, and opportunistic learning environment.
- In collaboration with the Advanced Practice Nurse(s), Clinical Nurse Manager and Clinical Development Nurse, assist with review and development of clinical policies, education, procedures, and practices which contribute to the delivery of high-quality care.
- Facilitate evidence-based quality improvement activities that reflect the changing trends in medical & surgical outpatient service delivery and align with the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable
- Have a post-graduate qualifications in clinical nursing, leadership or similar
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Minimum of four (4) years clinical experience in a similar role and role environment
Desirable
- Prior experience in wound management, orthopaedics, urology, vascular, plastic surgery, Ear Nose and Throat or Oral Maxillofacial will be highly desirable
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.
