Position overview
The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON), Nursing & Midwifery Workforce Support, leads and coordinates services within their portfolio, including the Nursing and Midwifery Resource Office (NMRO) and the eRostering Unit.
The NMRO manage the relief and casual pools of nursing staff which include:
- Registered Nurses
- Enrolled Nurses, and
- Assistants in Nursing
The relief and casual staff are an extremely skilled and supportive team that provide nursing resources to cover roster shortfalls and personal leave in the clinical areas. During times of increased patient activity, the NMRO is engaged to ensure staffing is available to open additional beds across the hospital to meet the surge in demand.
The NMRO also undertake casual recruitment which supports the nursing and midwifery workforce across Canberra Hospital.
The ADON position provides strategic and operational leadership in the effective management, coordination and optimisation of nursing and midwifery workforce resources across Canberra Hospital. Working collaboratively with clinical, professional and corporate stakeholders, ensuring workforce systems, processes and capabilities align with service delivery needs and organisational priorities.
The role holds organisational responsibility for the day-to-day operational management of the eRostering system and maintains an enterprise-wide view of nursing and midwifery workforce activity. By providing timely, accurate and meaningful workforce data and reporting, the ADON supports informed decision-making, optimises resource utilisation and promotes the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care.
The ADON reports to the Nursing and Midwifery Director, Canberra Hospital, and works closely with the Integrated Operations Centre and other senior nurses and midwives across CHS.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Under limited direction of the Nursing & Midwifery Director, Canberra Hospital, you will:
- Provide the day-to-day operational management of the eRostering system within CHS.
- On a day-to-day basis, have an organisational wide view of nursing and midwifery resources and provide timely and accurate reports which reflect the activity of nursing and midwifery across Canberra Hospital.
- Facilitate access and coordinate the delivery of appropriate information management products, technology resources and training to support the effective and efficient utilisation and management of nursing resources.
- Ensure that the users of the nursing clinical and information management systems within CHS have the necessary skills to undertake appropriate data entry and key information collections to produce accurate reports to support management decision making processes and ensure efficient utilisation of nursing resources.
- Develop collaborative partnerships between the various nursing and midwifery teams, medical and other professional teams within Canberra Hospital and liaise with other services within CHS as necessary.
- Provide leadership support and coordinate the delivery of services within your portfolio, including the Nursing and Midwifery Resource Office and the eRostering Unit.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Tertiary Qualification or related qualification in Nursing
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Desirable
- Relevant post graduate qualifications or equivalent.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
Essential
- A minimum of five years’ full time equivalent experience working professionally in a leadership/ management role
Desirable
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.
- Pre-employment National Police Check.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
