Position overview

The Canberra Hospital (CH) Emergency Department (ED) is a Level 6 Tertiary Service and Trauma Service and the major tertiary, trauma and referral centre for the ACT and surrounding region of NSW with more than 90,000 patients seen each year. The CH ED provides care for adults and children of all ages, as well as specialised assessment and treatment for all illnesses and injuries. The CH ED is integral to the role of Canberra Hospital as a Major Trauma Centre and Tertiary Health Facility for the ACT and surrounding NSW region.

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) provides strategic and operational nursing leadership to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centred emergency care 24/7. The role drives clinical governance, workforce capability and continuous improvement across the CH ED, supporting the Nursing & Midwifery Director, Canberra Hospital, to meet service demand and achieve performance targets with the CH ED.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Under limited director of the Nursing & Midwifery Director, Canberra Hospital, you will:

  • Drive the development, implementation and monitoring of nursing professional practices that support workforce capability, work health and safety, and evidence-based ED models of care.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory obligations while fostering professional development, education, research, clinical teaching, practice innovation and clinical supervision opportunities for nursing staff within the CH ED.
  • Oversee nursing workforce performance in alignment with the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards as outlined by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare. This includes leading the development, audit and review of clinical standards, policies, procedures, protocols and robust clinical governance processes.
  • Work in partnership with the multidisciplinary CH ED team to deliver high-quality care and achieve key performance indicators set by the organisation, ensuring patient safety, timely access and optimal outcomes.
  • Take responsibility for nursing budgets, staffing and resource utilisation within the CH ED, as well as be accountable for implementing effective workforce planning strategies and achieving agreed operational and financial targets.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

  • Tertiary Qualification or related qualification in Nursing
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

  • A minimum 5 years’ full time equivalent nursing experience including recent managerial experience

  2. Demonstrated high level skills in financial and human resource management (including rosters and leave management), and in establishing policies and processes for employee/industrial relations and resource management.
  3. Demonstrated experience in leading and developing multidisciplinary teams, change management and evidenced based best practice, as well as a proven commitment to the development of a learning, quality improvement and research orientated work environment.
  4. Highly effective written and oral communication and negotiation skills including the demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with internal and external service providers and stakeholders to affect a continuous care environment for consumers.
