Position overview

The purpose of the role is to maintain and over-see the general maintenance of Hospital plant and equipment defined by scope in this Position Description and ensure that compliance is achieved while completing all works.

FM are responsible for facilities management services across all North Canberra Hospital (NCH) properties (Acute and Non-Acute), buildings, plant and non-clinical equipment. These services include high quality and timely planned and reactive maintenance and technical trade skill repairs.

The Commercial Carpenter role reports to the Maintenance Manager and will undertake activities to support the delivery of planned and reactive maintenance, and repairs, for the North Canberra Hospital and other facilities managed by NCH across the ACT. The asset portfolio is a diverse and complex range of systems and essential infrastructure that support the critical nature of a Health service delivery model.

A secondary role of the Commercial carpenter is to provide support to the Maintenance Manager during various projects being undertaken across the campus by providing advice based on experience.

Key responsibilities

Under limited direction of the Maintenance Manager you will:

  • Within the limits of approved programs, organise and direct the work of the maintenance department in the repair and maintenance of base building structure and ancillary fittings and fixtures and facilities throughout the Hospital.
  • Accept responsibilities for the safety checking of all base building equipment and facilities to ensure compliance with Australian Standards. Co-ordinate, control and continually review a planned preventative maintenance system for all base building equipment and facilities.
  • Provide specialised technical advice and assistance where required on specific aspects of base building structure and ancillary fitting and facilities. Supervise installations and performance acceptance testing of equipment/plant where necessary.
  • The Commercial Carpenter will be responsible for ensuring that planned and reactive maintenance and repairs are delivered on time and within budget, whilst minimising any delays and reductions in the services offered across the various CHS Facilities.
  • Assist with Hospital Audits such as Accreditation and HICMAR.
  • Review and provide feedback to the Maintenance Manager on processes and procedures to determine if more efficient processes are achievable without adverse impact to operation.
  • Implement and sustain effective maintenance plans/programs.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Competencies

  • Demonstrated ability in supervising staff in engineering or trades based fields including leadership and team building
  • Demonstrated ability in the planning, co-ordination and control of engineering and tradesman based operations including planned preventative maintenance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of asset management systems and a proven capacity to oversee the development and implementation of asset standards, procurement utilisation and maintenance.
  • Proven knowledge of relevant legislation, Regulations, Standards and codes of practice in a multidisciplinary engineering environment, with specific knowledge of the technical requirements affecting health services and assets. Sound planning and communication skills.
  • Sound knowledge in the installation of Commercial Doors and associated Door hardware.
  • Sound knowledge in Fire Rating Principles.
  • Sound knowledge in Suspended Ceilings, (Exposed and concealed Grid).
  • Sound knowledge in all types of Partition Construction.
  • Sound knowledge in aluminium partition suites and frame construction.
  • Sound knowledge of power tools and there usage.
  • Sound knowledge in minor maintenance, (fitting off of whiteboards, TV Brackets, bollard installation etc).
  • Glazing Skills.
  • Plastering Skills.
  • Computer skills, Word, Excel etc
  • If demand requires the ability to clear minor sewer blockages and the like.
  • Current ACT Drivers Licence.

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Recognised Carpenter trade qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Current ACT Drivers Licence.
  • The successful applicant will need to be available for weekend and after-hours work on a rotating basis.
  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.

Experience

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

Essential

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in commercial carpentry.
  • Experience working on large-scale commercial construction sites.
  • Proven ability in structural framing (timber and/or steel).
  • Experience with concrete formwork systems.
  • Skilled in commercial fit-out and finishing work.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and plans.
  • Installation of walls, ceilings, partitions, doors, and windows.
  • Strong understanding of Work Health & Safety (WHS) requirements.
  • Ability to follow Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS).
  • Competent in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to meet project deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Must hold a valid White Card.
  • Relevant qualification such as Certificate III in Carpentry (or equivalent).

Desirable

  • Experience with multi-storey commercial developments.
  • Additional tickets such as Working at Heights.
  • EWP (Elevated Work Platform) licence.
  • Background in shopfitting or detailed commercial fit-outs.
  • Ability to lead small teams or act as a leading hand.
  • Strong problem-solving skills on-site.
  • Experience coordinating with multiple trades.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering/shop drawings.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • Good communication skills with supervisors and site managers.
  • High level of work ethic and reliability.
  • Willingness to work overtime or weekends when and if required.

Prior to commencement

  • Pre-employment National Police Check.
