Position overview

Infrastructure and Facilities Services (IFS), a branch of North Canberra Hospital (NCH), are responsible for:

  • Capital project delivery.
  • Facilities Management.
  • Asset Management.
  • Minor Works project.
  • Off-Site Maintenance at Clare Holland House (CHH).
  • Domestic and Environmental Services.
  • Food Services.
  • Procurement.
  • Fleet Management.

Facilities Management (FM) is responsible for all FM services across all NCH and CHH properties (Acute and Non-Acute), buildings, plant and non-clinical equipment. These services include high quality and timely delivery of planned and reactive maintenance, asset management, utilities and contracts for the Canberra Health Services property portfolio at NCH and CHH.

The Senior Refrigeration Mechanic will report to the Assistant Director, Facilities Maintenance (ADFM) and will undertake activities to support the delivery of planned and reactive maintenance, and repairs for the North Canberra Hospital and other facilities managed by NCH across the ACT. The asset portfolio is a diverse and complex range of mechanical systems and essential infrastructure that support the critical nature of a Health service delivery model.

The Senior Refrigeration Mechanic will have a unique understanding of the responsibilities and accountabilities of the role, being able to work collaboratively across a range of areas in CHS. The incumbent will provide outstanding leadership, communicate professionally and work with flexibility, efficiency, and diplomacy both individually and as part of a complex team effort.

Key responsibilities

Under the limited direction of the Assistant Director, Facilities Maintenance (ADFM) you will perform a variety of hydraulic related tasks including but not limited to the following:

You will:

  • Actively manage and participate in the operation of planned and reactive maintenance and Work Order requests including undertake essential repair works and general maintenance activities at the request of Management.
  • Liaise with the Assistant Director, Facilities Maintenance regarding plant or equipment failures and to request the supply of goods and/or services as necessary.
  • Undertake fault finding on HVAC&R equipment and systems and report findings.
  • Monitor BMS alarms and proactively fix any HVAC related issues.
  • Undertake plant room audits, liaise with Mechanical contractors and BMS techs and provide recommendations to Assistant director, Facilities Maintenance.
  • Participate in Facilities Management Services process improvement activities, and where appropriate recommend the investigation of process improvements related to the work area. Including participate as required in the planning process for new buildings and projects.
  • Complete all report sheets, work orders, logbooks and test certificates in hard copy or electronic logger as necessary.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Recognised HVAC Trade Licence (Cert III in Air Conditioning & Refrigeration.
  • Refrigerant Handling License:
  • Construction Induction Card (White Card).
  • 5+ years’ experience in commercial HVAC.
  • Restricted Electrical License.
  • The successful applicant may need to be available for weekend and after-hours work on a rotating roster.
  • Asbestos awareness training.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

Essential

  • At least 3 to 5 years’ experience in a Health care setting or similar environment.

Desirable

  • Willingness to participate in an employer-sponsored courses within the first 12 months of employment (if required)
  • Hold a current drivers’ licence.

Prior to commencement

  • Pre-employment National Police Check.
  • Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.

Key selection criteria

  1. Proven experience in HVAC-related services and specialised equipment in a large health care setting or similar environment.
  2. Ability to understand priorities relating to services and patient care and to be able to complete work to meet those objectives.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of asset management systems and a proven capacity to oversee the development and implementation of asset standards, procurement utilisation and maintenance.
  4. Proven knowledge of relevant legislation, Regulations, Standards and codes of practice in a multidisciplinary engineering environment, with specific knowledge of the technical requirements affecting health services and assets. Sound planning and communication skills.
  5. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
