Position Overview

Infrastructure and Facilities Services (IFS), a branch of North Canberra Hospital (NCH), are responsible for:

  • Capital project delivery.
  • Facilities Management.
  • Asset Management.
  • Minor Works project.
  • Off-Site Maintenance at Clare Holland House (CHH).
  • Domestic and Environmental Services.
  • Food Services.
  • Procurement.
  • Fleet Management.

Facilities Management (FM) is responsible for all FM services across all NCH and CHH properties (Acute and Non-Acute), buildings, plant and non-clinical equipment. These services include high quality and timely delivery of planned and reactive maintenance, asset management, utilities and contracts for the Canberra Health Services property portfolio at NCH and CHH.

The purpose of the role is to maintain and over-see the general maintenance of Hospital hydraulic systems and equipment defined by scope in this Position Description and ensure that compliance is achieved while completing all works.

The Plumbing role reports to the Assistant Director, Facilities Maintenance (ADFM) and will undertake activities to support the delivery of planned and reactive maintenance, and repairs for the North Canberra Hospital and other facilities managed by NCH across the ACT. The asset portfolio is a diverse and complex range of hydraulic systems and essential infrastructure that support the critical nature of a Health service delivery model.

Key responsibilities

Under the limited direction of the Assistant Director, Facilities Maintenance (ADFM) you will perform a variety of hydraulic related tasks including but not limited to the following;

You will:

  • Undertake planned and reactive maintenance relating to hydraulic activities including undertake essential repair works and general maintenance activities at the request of Management.
  • Accept responsibilities for the safety checking of all base building hydraulics and facilities to ensure compliance with Australian Standards. Co-ordinate, control and continually review a planned preventative maintenance system for all base building hydraulic equipment and facilities.
  • Provide specialised technical advice and assistance where required on specific aspects of base building hydraulic structure and ancillary fitting and facilities. Supervise installations and performance acceptance testing of equipment/plant where necessary.
  • Assist contracted plumbers with advice and knowledge of the hydraulic system during Capital Project Works on the Campus.
  • The Plumber will be responsible for ensuring that planned and reactive maintenance and repairs are delivered on time and within budget, whilst minimising any delays and reductions in the services offered across the various CHS Facilities.
  • Review and provide feedback to the ADFM on processes and procedures to determine if more efficient processes are achievable without diverse impact on operation.
  • Assist with Hospital Audits such as Accreditation and provide advice to the requirements of the Water Management Plan and.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications

Mandatory

  • Recognised Plumbing Trade Licence;
  • Recognised licence to be able to repair and service TMV’s;
  • Recognised licence to be able to repair and service RPZD’s;
  • All necessary licences and registration required in the role of a plumber;
  • The successful applicant may need to be available for weekend and after-hours work on a rotating roster.
  • Asbestos awareness training.
  • General Induction white card.
  • At least 3 to 5 years’ plumbing experience in a Health care setting or similar environment.

Desirable

  • Confined Space training or willingness to participate in an employer-sponsored course within the first 12 months of employment.
  • Working at Heights training or willingness to participate in an employer-sponsored course within the first 12 months of employment.
  • Hold a current drivers’ licence.
  • At least 3 to 5 years’ plumbing experience in a Health care setting or similar environment.
  • Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
  • Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.

  • Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
  • Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.

What you Require (Key Selection Criteria)

These are the key selection criteria for how you will be assessed in conjunction with your CV and experience.

  1. Proven experience in hydraulic-related services and specialised equipment in a large health care setting or similar environment.
  2. Ability to understand priorities relating to services and patient care and to be able to complete work to meet those objectives.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of asset management systems and a proven capacity to oversee the development and implementation of asset standards, procurement utilisation and maintenance.
  4. Proven knowledge of relevant legislation, Regulations, Standards and codes of practice in a multidisciplinary engineering environment, with specific knowledge of the technical requirements affecting health services and assets. Sound planning and communication skills.
  5. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
