Position overview
The ACT Breast Care Nurse (BCN) Service provides high level specialist cancer nursing support to patients diagnosed with breast cancer across the continuum of care. The position provides comprehensive assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of complex patient care in the oncology setting to achieve best practice.
The BCN Team provides service to ACT and surrounding regions in both the public and private sector. The BCN works within the Five Domains of Clinical Practice to provide: Supportive Care, Co-ordinated Care, Collaborative Care, Information Provision and Education as well as Clinical Leadership and actively participates in Research.
Key responsibilities
- Practice in accordance with relevant Government Health policies, procedures and guidelines; the
position description; Code of Conduct for Nurses; and industrial agreements. - Support breast cancer clients throughout their oncology treatment, collaborating with the
multidisciplinary team (MDT) to ensure the optimal delivery of coordinated care. - Communicate with the MDT to co-ordinate treatment and provide updates to all key stakeholders
using highly developed written and oral communication skills, including the ability to manage
complex and sensitive issues. - Facilitate a coordinated approach to care planning, implementation and evaluation by ensuring
comprehensive health and support services are delivered in a timely, flexible and efficient manner
with respect to individual patient needs. - Participate in policy and procedure reviews within the breast care service.
- Advance and improve breast cancer care through a range of clinical leadership and professional
activities, including participation in relevant local and national breast care treatment forums. - Actively seek learning opportunities to enhance knowledge of interventions, therapeutics and clinical skills related to breast cancer treatment, and contribute to the professional development of peers,colleagues and others.
- Engage with community stakeholders to facilitate and optimise support and care of breast cancer
patients. - Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation ofthe organisation.

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Current Australian unrestricted Driver’s Licence.
Desirable
- Post graduate qualifications in cancer nursing, oncology, palliative care or other relevant areas.
- Post-Graduate Breast Cancer Nurse Qualifications.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
Essential
- Minimum of 5 years post qualification experience working professionally as a registered nurse with recent experience in oncology/ Palliative care or cancer stream specific nursing.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
Desirable
- Experience in the management of patients and families with a diagnosis of Breast Cancer.
Prior to commencement
- Pre-employment National Police Check.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
