Position overview

The Women's and Children's Division within North Canberra Hospital provides maternity, neonatal and gynaecology services to women, babies and their families across the ACT. Services include antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care, gynaecology services, Special Care Nursery (SCN) care and domiciliary support. Care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team comprising nursing and midwifery staff, medical officers and allied health professionals.

The Registered Nurse/Midwife Level 2 provides advanced clinical care to neonates admitted to the SCN and demonstrates a high level of neonatal nursing knowledge, clinical expertise and critical thinking. The role is responsible for delivering safe, evidence based and family centred care to neonates with varying levels of complexity and acuity.

As an experienced clinician, the Registered Nurse/Midwife Level 2 provides clinical leadership within the SCN, supporting, mentoring and role modelling best practice for colleagues while fostering a positive and collaborative team culture. The successful applicant will be expected to coordinate patient care, lead shifts and respond effectively to changing clinical priorities in a dynamic environment.

The Registered Nurse/Midwife Level 2 will work both independently and collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team and be confident in making clinical decisions, escalating concerns and coordinating care in high acuity situations. The role requires the ability to function as the Nurse Team Leader, providing clinical oversight of the unit with support from on call medical officers and senior nursing staff when required.

The position actively contributes to quality improvement, clinical governance, education and service development activities to support the delivery of high-quality neonatal care and positive outcomes for babies and their families.

Key responsibilities

  1. Provide advanced neonatal nursing and/or midwifery care to babies within the Special Care Nursery, ensuring care is evidence based, family centred and delivered in accordance with professional standards, legislation, policies and procedures.
  2. Coordinate and lead clinical care within the Special Care Nursery, including patient flow, clinical prioritisation, escalation of deteriorating patients and management of admissions, transfers and discharges.
  3. Function as the Nurse Team Leader, working both independently and collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team, and liaising with on call medical officers and senior nursing staff to support safe and effective patient care.
  4. Attend births where neonatal support may be required and provide timely assessment, stabilisation and resuscitation of the newborn within scope of practice, working collaboratively with maternity and medical teams and providing appropriate care while awaiting the arrival of the paediatrician when required.
  5. Support the development of staff through clinical teaching, preceptorship, mentorship and role modelling of professional practice.
  6. Contribute to clinical governance activities including quality improvement, risk management, incident review, policy development and implementation of evidence-based practice initiatives.
  7. Foster a positive workplace culture that promotes teamwork, collaboration, open communication, family partnership and continuous improvement.
  8. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification that contribute to the effective operation of the service.

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Tertiary Qualification in Nursing or Midwifery
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Completion (or working towards) post graduate qualifications in neonatal intensive care nursing.
