Position overview

The Women's and Children's Division within North Canberra Hospital provides Maternity & Gynaecology services to consumers residing in the ACT or surrounding region. Staff working in the in-patient ward (3S) provide care for antenatal and postnatal women (and newborns) as well as for women recovering from general surgery or those that require a hospital admission for medical treatment.

Registered Midwives work within the multidisciplinary team that includes Registered Nurses, Medical Officers, Allied Health Professionals and Hospital Support Staff.

Level 2 RMs are employed on all shifts and contribute to the provision of skilled midwifery care that promotes best clinical outcomes for consumers. The Level 2 RM is a clinical leader that supervises and supports the whole team with a focus on support for Level 1 Registered Midwives working in the area. The Level 2 RM works in collaboration with the Clinical Flow Managers (CFM) to ensure that staffing allocation is appropriate and within staffing ratios.

Key responsibilities

Provision of advanced clinical care

  • Apply advanced knowledge and skills in the planning, coordination and provision of midwifery care in accordance with the ACT Public Service Work Level Standards and accepts responsibility for own actions in midwifery practice.

Clinical leadership

  • Preceptors and mentors. Is a clinical resource for staff
  • Functions as a team leader and operates in partnership with the CFM and the multidisciplinary team

Communicates effectively

  • Utilises effective interpersonal and written communication skills and works collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team

Prioritises education

  • supports and helps develop Performance Development Plans (PDPs) with Level 1 RMs
  • participates in professional development of self and others and takes responsibility for own professional development

Quality focus

  • has a demonstrated commitment to clinical research, procedure development, clinical auditing and quality improvement process’.
  • manages organisational resources appropriately
  • adherence to organisational values
  • prioritises safety in the workplace

Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation

Competencies

Ideally the RM will have the following competencies:

  • Well baby assessment.
  • Infant feeding support.
  • Digital Health Record (DHR).
  • IV cannulation and Venipuncture.
  • Insertion of in-dwelling catheter and bladder management.

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Be registered as a Registered Midwife or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • The successful applicant will need to be available for weekend, night-duty and after-hours work.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.

  • A minimum of one year experience in a Level 2 RM or Team leader role.

Desirable

  • Prior experience of working in a women’s health environment would be highly desirable.
