Position overview

The Women and Children Division within North Canberra Hospital primarily provides maternity and gynecology services to consumers residing in the ACT and surrounding region. Staff working in the in-patient ward (3S) provide care for antenatal and postnatal women and birthing people, and newborns, as well as for women recovering from general surgery or those that require a hospital admission for medical treatment.

Registered Midwives work within the multidisciplinary team that includes Registered Nurses, Medical Officers, Allied Health Professionals and Hospital Support Staff.

Level 1 RMs are employed on all shifts and contribute to the provision of skilled midwifery care that promotes best clinical outcomes for consumers. The Level 1 RM reports to the Level 2 Registered Midwife.

Key responsibilities

  1. Plan, coordinate and provide high-quality care to women and newborns in accordance with the ACT Public Service Work Level Standards and assist colleagues and the multidisciplinary team in care provision.
  2. Use effective interpersonal communication with consumers, families and colleagues, including the use of ISBAR and document care provision appropriately in the DHR.
  3. Actively participate in audits and quality improvement projects.
  4. Adhere to policy and procedure, use organisational resources appropriately, adhere to organisational values, prioritise safety in the workplace.
  5. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Competencies

Ideally the RM will have (or be working towards gaining) the following competencies:

  • IV cannulation.
  • Venipuncture.
  • Well baby assessment.
  • Insertion of in-dwelling catheter and bladder management.
  • Infant feeding support.

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Be registered as a Registered Midwife (Division 1) or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • The successful applicant will need to be available for weekend, night-duty and after-hours work.
  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.

  • A minimum of one year experience working in a hospital setting.

Desirable

  • Prior experience in Endoscopy will be highly desirable
  • Prior experience of working in a women’s health environment would be highly desirable
