Position overview
The Emergency Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides advanced, autonomous emergency care and works collaboratively to support timely, high‑quality patient management. The role strengthens emergency service delivery through expert clinical decision‑making, leadership, and evidence‑based practice. It also contributes to service improvement, innovation, and the ongoing advancement of nursing practice within the multidisciplinary team.
A Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse endorsed as an NP by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). The NP practices at a clinical advanced level, meets and complies with the Nurse practitioner standards for practice, is able to practise independently and has direct clinical contact. NPs practice collaboratively in multi-professional environments. The NP practises within their scope under the legislatively protected title ‘Nurse Practitioner’ under the National Law.
Key responsibilities
- Provides advanced nursing and medical care using innovative models for patients and families presenting to the ED.
- Functions autonomously and collaboratively in an advanced, extended clinical role with other health professionals to diagnose, treat, and manage patients’ health conditions.
- Utilises advanced skills, education, and clinical autonomy to deliver evidence‑based care in the ED.
- Provides clinical expertise and support to ED multi-disciplinary team.
- Influences and advances clinical care, policy, procedures, and interdisciplinary collaboration as a subject matter expert, including representing the ED on internal and external committees.
- Fosters a positive workplace culture through constructive feedback and staff support.
- Undertakes other duties, appropriate to this classification level, that contribute to the effective operation of the organisation.
Competencies
- Demonstrates advanced clinical leadership and is accountable for delivering safe, evidence‑based emergency care in alignment with NMBA standards.
- Applies expert assessment, diagnostic reasoning, clinical judgement, and problem‑solving skills to manage complex Emergency Department presentations.
- Leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical guidelines, protocols, and models of care informed by contemporary evidence.
- Drives quality improvement, innovation, and risk‑management initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and maintain a safe clinical environment.
- Provides clinical supervision, mentoring, and education to nursing and multidisciplinary staff, fostering a culture of learning and capability building.
- Contributes expert advice to policy, strategic planning, and organisational objectives, including participation in committees and working groups.
- Works collaboratively across disciplines to support integrated care, influence service planning, and strengthen team‑based practice.
- Applies contemporary resource‑management principles and may oversee human, material, and financial resources to support service delivery.
- Leads and evaluates change initiatives, promoting innovation, continuous improvement, and responsiveness to emerging healthcare needs.
- Maintains professional competence through portfolio development, reflective practice, and active engagement in research.
Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Registered and endorsed as a Nurse Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Ability to obtain and maintain hospital credentialing as an NP.
Desirable
- Post graduate tertiary qualifications in Emergency Nursing.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
Essential
- Significant recent experience delivering advanced clinical care in an Emergency Department or comparable setting.
Desirable
- A minimum of five years’ experience working in an Emergency Department.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement
- Pre-employment National Police Check.
- Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for Nurse Practitioners.
