Position overview
The Clinical Nurse Educator Policy, Education and Training is responsible for supporting nursing and midwifery staff with the implementation of new policy and procedures and assisting with updates to ensure they reflect CHS requirements and are evidenced based. This role will also support Required training assessment and coordination. The role is also responsible for coordinating and facilitating clinical placements for all nursing and work experience students at North Canberra Hospital, in accordance with established Deeds and Schedules. This role provides high-quality customer service and promotes collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure quality clinical learning opportunities. It involves reconciling priorities and objectives and ensuring effective clinical placements are offered to students and trainees, while balancing the competing interests of clinical areas, multiple education providers, and student groups to achieve fair and equitable outcomes.
This role requires substantial advanced practice experience in nursing and applies a systems approach to education programs and units of instruction. Additionally, it supports a defined area within the National Quality in Health Care Standards.
Key responsibilities
Under limited direction of the Executive Director Nursing & Midwifery & Learning & Development you will coordinate and facilitate clinical placements for all nursing students within North Canberra Hospital under established Deeds and Schedules.
You will:
- Liaise with Clinical Placement Office, Education providers and hospital staff to facilitate nursing student placements.
- Arrangement and orientation of nursing and work experience student placements, including rostering, evaluation and incorporation of feedback.
- Collect and maintain student placement data.
- Supervise and support in-house clinical facilitation staff by assisting with student teaching/education /logistical support as required.
- Supporting students with clinical and logistical activities relating to their placement e.g. roster swaps, personal leave, professional conduct issues, IT access both pre & during their placements.
- Support Learning and Development activities related to required and mandatory training (not limited to).
- Support divisional education staff with assessment and coordination of required training.
- Liaise with CHS Policy team to support timely review and implementation of policy and procedure and support divisions with these tasks.
- Represent NCH on appropriate internal and external committees (such as NSQHS committees and industry partner meetings).
- Be available to local NSQHS committees to support learning and development.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.
Competencies
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Recent experience in leadership and education positions with a minimum of 4 years’ post graduate experience working professionally in nursing. (excluding new graduate year).
- Experience in the development and facilitation of education.
- Demonstrated understanding of Adult Learning Principles.
- Proven ability to work effectively within an education team and in partnership with clinical teams across NCH and external stakeholders. Experience in the supervision of students and/or newly graduated nurses.
- Adaptability and flexibility to accommodate change and provide responsive services to meet organisational needs.
Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Registered as a Registered Nurse (Division 1) with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Relevant post graduate qualifications in relevant area(s) of expertise and/or education or willing to undertake relevant studies and a minimum of 4 years’ post graduate clinical experience.
Desirable
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or other post graduate qualifications.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
Experience

- Working knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications and familiar with eLearning platforms.
Prior to commencement
- Pre-employment National Police Check.
- Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.
