Position overview
The Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) is responsible for nursing education within the Emergency Department. The CNE works collaboratively with the ED leadership team to provide a structured and strategic approach for nursing education.
The CNE provides direction, management and leadership of the ED Clinical Development Nurses.
Key responsibilities
- Provide direct education, guidance, and support to Registered Nurses, undergraduate nurses, Assistants in Nursing, and Health Service Assistants, and facilitate ongoing learning and professional development opportunities.
- Participate in training, assessment, and credentialing processes to meet professional practice standards, as well as departmental and organisational mandatory training requirements.
- Lead the strategic planning, design, and coordination of education programs for nursing staff, students, health professionals, and other staff within the Emergency Department.
- Adhere to approved curricula and participate in the review, development, and implementation of new and/or existing curricula, including active participation in committees related to education programs, needs, and initiatives.
- Contribute to the review, planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of educational and clinical policies, procedures, processes, standards, and work practices, ensuring alignment with best available evidence and research to achieve learning and development outcomes.
- Ensure staff maintain currency of qualifications required for their scope and span of practice.
- Provide accountability and supervision for Emergency Department Clinical Development Nurses.
- In consultation with the Emergency Department Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) and leadership team, support the department in meeting key performance indicators.
- Represent the Emergency Department on internal and external committees as required.
- Foster a positive and inclusive workplace culture, including providing constructive feedback across all staff levels.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to the level of classification that contribute to the effective operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Minimum of 5 years post registration nursing experience and at least two years in Emergency Nursing
- Hold a Post Graduate qualification in Emergency Nursing or equivalent or be working towards one.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver quality nursing care in accordance with the ANMC National Competency Standards for a Registered Nurse
- Demonstrated computer literacy relevant to the role, including responsibility for completing required documentation and achieving proficiency in the CHS Digital Health Record and other information technology systems. Once proficient, the ability to maintain currency with system updates, changes, and contingencies is required.
Desirable
- Hold Post Graduate qualification in Nursing Education or equivalent.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

- Demonstrated excellent clinical skills in providing direct patient care for all Emergency Department presentations, utilising the nursing process (incorporating a risk assessment approach) while working within professional legislation and existing policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver a range of learning and professional development opportunities for nurses who are providing care at basic and advanced levels; and measuring education to identify learning retention by clinical staff.
- Proven ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, with well developed communication skills that foster collaboration, open communication, and constructive feedback, consistent with professional standards of behaviour.
- Demonstrated commitment to research, best practice, continuous quality improvement and continuous professional development of self and others.
- Experience in managing education workforce requirements.
- Demonstrated understanding of safety and quality standards, Work Health and Safety (WHS) principles, and the delivery of a positive patient experience, with behaviours aligned to CHS values.
