Position overview
Within the Framework of the Vision and Values of North Canberra Hospital Bruce, the role of the Clinical Development Nurse (CDN) is to provide a coordinated and structured approach for palliative care education within the specialist palliative care service.
Key responsibilities
Support the transition of new nurses into the organisation and nursing workforce
- Assist in identifying and facilitating departmental learning needs.
- Provides a coordinated approach to education and clinical development for staff delivering care across CHH services including community care.
- Provide ‘hands on” clinical support and backfill as required.
- Provide feedback on work performance.
- Enhance nursing professional development & promote evidence-based practice.
- Provide orientation and preceptorship for new staff, students and new graduates.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Current driver’s licence.
Desirable
- Attained or working towards a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
- Postgraduate qualification in palliative care
- Community nursing experience
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
Essential
- Minimum 4 years full time equivalent post graduate registered nursing experience
Desirable
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement
- Pre-employment National Police Check.
- Current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.

CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.
Key selection criteria
- Demonstrated competence and leadership in providing direct patient care (for patients of varying complexity) utilising the nursing process and incorporating a risk assessment approach while working within professional legislation and existing policies and procedures.
- Prepare and deliver a range of learning and professional development opportunities for nurses who are providing care at basic levels while measuring education to identify learning retention by clinical staff associated with the patient experience and health outcome/s.
- Incorporate the full range of materials for education and training including, for example, evidence-based guidelines and materials, audio-visual, electronic publications, and the library catalogue to meet the learners and service needs.
- Administer relevant training and education sessions to account for diversity and different learning styles, for example, simulated and online learning. Applies adult learning principles to motivate performance and ensure successful learning.
- Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with Northside Hospital CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
