Position overview
Mental Health, Justice Health, Alcohol and Drug Services (MHJHADS) provides mental health services directly and through partnerships with community organizations. The services provided, range from prevention and treatment to recovery and maintenance, and harm minimisation. The participation of the people who use the service, including families and carers, is encouraged in all aspects of service planning and delivery. The Division works in partnership with a range of government and non-government service providers to ensure the best possible outcomes for clients.
The Division delivers services at a number of locations, including hospital inpatient and outpatient settings, community health centres, detention centres, other community settings including people’s home. These services include:
- Adult Acute Mental Health Services
- Adult Community Mental Health Services
- Alcohol & Drug Services
- Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)
- Justice Health Services
- Rehabilitation and Specialty Mental Health Services
- Older Persons Mental Health Services (acute and community)
Key responsibilities
The Clinical Development Nurse (CDN) is responsible for clinical teaching and the development of nursing practice within the clinical environment. This position reports to the NCH Mental Health Division Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) and will liaise with the CNC’s, managers, education providers, and other internal and external stakeholders in support of ongoing clinical education, preceptorship, mandatory skills assessment, and competency assessment processes for nurses working in the NCH Mental Health Division and across NCH where required.
You will be required to undertake professional development and supervision, participate in quality initiatives, and contribute to the multidisciplinary team processes via:
- Promoting and supporting the clinical teaching of nurses within the workplace utilising adult learning principles and following practice standards and policies.
- Providing and/or facilitating clinical education, reflective practice, preceptorship, clinical supervision, mandatory skills assessment, and competency assessment for nurses working within NCH Mental Health Division and across NCH where required.
- Participating in risk management, quality improvement, nursing practice review, clinical audit and clinical research activities.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues and leaders and maintaining a depth knowledge of legislation and standards affecting nursing practice within the NCH Mental Health Division and across NCH.
- Providing active input into the development and revision of clinical policy and practice manuals.
- Facilitating and supporting staff development through various platforms including but not limited to clinically specific Self-Directed Learning packages, simulated learning scenarios and the participation in continuing professional development workshops and inservice education events.
- Provide clinical education, preceptorship, clinical supervision, mandatory skills assessment, and competency assessment processes for nurses working in the NCH Mental Health Division and across NCH where needed.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable
- Hold or be working toward Post Graduate qualification in mental health nursing.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
Essential
- Four (4) years FTE (6840 hours) of post graduate hours of practice worked in direct or indirect roles in mental health nursing (inclusive of 7 weeks annual leave per year).
Or
- Completion of a relevant post graduate certificate (or working towards) and three (3) years FTE (5130 hours) worked in direct or indirect roles in mental health nursing.
Or
- Minimum of 2 yrs FTE (1978 hours) RN experience if in possession of 2 or more years of prior EN FTE experience within area of mental health nursing.
Desirable
- Demonstrated experience in adult education and clinical practice development.
- Recent experience working in acute adult mental health settings.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
- Current driver’s licence.

- Pre-employment National Police Check.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.
