Position overview

An opportunity exists to join the Medical Stream Education Team, as a Clinical Development Nurse (CDN). The Medical Stream Education Team is responsible for providing support to nursing staff across the medical stream to achieve excellence in clinical practice, standards of care and improved patient outcomes.

The CDN is expected to work with minimal supervision; provide clinical leadership and advice to the nursing team with regards to complex nursing matters, demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to liaise with key stakeholders of the organisation. The CDN role will provide support and education across the medical stream from Monday to Friday with varying shifts from 0700-1800hrs.


The Clinical Development Nurse is expected to have a demonstrated competence in advanced nursing practice, provide guidance to less experienced nursing staff and provide direct nursing care as required.

This role works collaboratively with and takes direction on clinical and education priorities from the Clinical Nurse Educator and the Ward Clinical Nurse Consultant.

Key responsibilities

Under limited direction of the Medical Stream Clinical Nurse Educator, you will perform clinical leadership, support education and training across the medical stream. You will:

  1. Facilitate clinical teaching within the medical stream, using adult learning principles whilst following clinical best practice standards and hospital policy. This includes orientating new staff/students.
  2. Review and evaluate clinical practice, identifying staff development needs and undertaking competency assessments.
  3. Promote high quality health outcomes by participating in policy development and quality improvement projects.
  4. Work in collaboration with ward CNC to maintain cohesion and open communication for management of staff and their skill requirements/deficits.
  5. Support cultural and organisational change creating a culture of engagement and participation. This includes team wellbeing and participation in staff recognition initiatives.
  6. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) qualifications.
  • Completion of a clinical teaching or facilitating program/workshop.
  • Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

Essential

RN Level 2 pre-requisite:

  • Minimum years of worked experience required for a Registered Nurse (RN) Level 2 classification at Canberra Health Services (CHS):
    • Four (4) years (6840 hours) of post graduate hours of practice worked in direct or indirect roles (inclusive of 7 weeks annual leave per year).
      OR
    • Completion of a relevant post graduate certificate (or working towards) and three (3) years (5130 hours) worked in direct or indirect roles.
      OR
    • Minimum of 2 years (1978 hours) RN experience if in possession of 2 or more years of prior EN experience within area of specialty.

Desirable

  • Experience in a Clinical Development Nurse role/education role and demonstrated competence in assessment and training techniques.

Prior to commencement

  • Pre-employment National Police Check.
  • Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
