Position overview
Registered Nurse Level 2 (RN2) forms a key part of direct patient care and lays the foundation of clinical leadership at North Canberra Hospital (NCH). This entails advance knowledge in the field of practice, appropriate skills and experience of team leadership. At NCH, the role of RN2 encompasses four key categories: clinical, management, education and research. RN2 is expected to excel in all four categories.
The RN2 plays a vital role in ensuring that services meet National Health and Quality Standards, improved staff performance and delivery of high quality evidence-based patient care.
The Nurse Graduate Program Clinical Development Nurse will work within the Clinical Education Team to provide education and support to the Graduate Nurses within the Graduate Nurse Program (GNP). This support includes clinical supervision, graduate support, education sessions, study day coordination and program implementation. The purpose of this role is to work in partnership with clinical teams across both North Canberra Hospital and Clare Holland House to support the transition of new nurses from student to graduate. While the Nurse graduates would be the priority for this role, the Graduate Nurse Program Clinical Development Nurse would also be required to assist with hospital wide mandatory training education.
Key responsibilities
Under limited direction of the Graduate Nurse Program Coordinator and Executive Director of Nursing & Midwifery and Learning & Development, you will:
- Facilitate clinical teaching of graduate nurses participating in NCH Graduate Nurse Program within the workplace utilising adult learning principles and following practice standards and policies.
- Facilitate reflective practice for graduate nurses and facilitate or arrange debriefing sessions, providing advice and support as required.
- Complete assessments of graduate nurses within clinical settings as outlined in the National Standards Practice for the Registered Nurse (2016) and National Standards for Practice for the Enrolled Nurse (2016).
- Monitor and keep records of graduate nurse progress during the program, reporting their progress to the NCH Graduate Nurse Program Coordinator and Divisional managers.
- Participate in risk management, quality improvement, nursing practice review and clinical research activities associated with the Graduate Nurse Program and wider Clinical Education team.
- In conjunction with the NCH Graduate Nurse Program Coordinator, facilitate a clinically based orientation program and participate in the recruitment process of graduate nurses including developing questions for selection criteria and being a member of application review panels.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and leaders and have in depth knowledge of legislation affecting clinical practice within Canberra Health Services. Provide input into the development and revision of clinical policy and practice manuals.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Tertiary Qualification in nursing
- Holds a current Australian Drivers Licence
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable
- Certificate IV in training and assessment.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
Essential
- A minimum 3 years experience as a registered nurse in an acute care setting.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
Desirable
- Experience in the development and facilitation of education and clinical assessments including clinical debrief.
- Experience as a CDN is highly desirable.

- Pre-employment National Police Check.

- Demonstrated ability to assess the competence and support the practice of inexperienced nurses within the clinical setting.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of, commitment to, and participation in nursing practice review, quality improvement and reflective practice.
- Demonstrated leadership, negotiation, and effective written and verbal communication skills to accomplish conflict resolution whilst maintaining confidentiality both within the clinical environment and within a team.
