Position Overview
The Health Service Assistant is responsible for the supporting the nursing team in the delivery of nursing care in an acute care environment, as directed by the Registered Nurse (RN). Provide direct care activities to patients in accordance with the nursing care plan and under the supervision of an RN. Assist both RN and EN with patient care interventions as directed, and contribute to collecting accurate health care information and maintaining health care documentation as required. Communicate effectively with patients and other health care team members.
Duties
Under limited direction of the ED Clinical Manager you will:
- Assist in the delivery of the following direct care activities as allocated by a Registered Nurse:
- Patient personal care
- Repositioning, pressure area and skin care
- General patient ambulation and support mobilisation as per plan of care
- Assistance with toileting
- Taking and documenting of patient vital observations
- Blood Glucose measurement (after completing competency)
- Obtaining / Attending Urinalysis (after completing competency)
- Physical movement of patients within the ED
- Restock department medical consumables
- Change and make up occupied and unoccupied beds
- Report all patient observation to the appropriate Enrolled or Registered Nurse
- Practice in accordance with the relevant legislation.
- Practice in a way that acknowledges the dignity, culture, values, beliefs and rights of individuals and/or groups.
- Advocate for individuals and/or groups and their rights for nursing care within the organisational and management structure.
- Understand and practice within your own scope of practice.
- Integrates organisational policy and guidelines with professional standards.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications
Mandatory
- Hold a HLT33115 Health Services Assistant (Assistant in Nursing – acute care) – certificate III or have completed the first year of a Bachelor of Nursing.
- The successful applicant will need to work a rotating roster including evenings, nights and weekends.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver quality nursing care in accordance with the ANMC National Competency Standards for a Registered Nurse.
- CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.
Desirable
- Previous experience working as an AIN within an acute care environment.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
