Position Overview

The Division of Surgery at NCH is responsible for delivering inpatient and outpatients surgical services and includes Surgical Bookings, Pre-Admission Clinic, Anaesthesia, Pain Management Unit, Perioperative Suite, Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit, Day Surgery Unit, Admissions, Endoscopy, Specialist Outpatient Clinics and surgical ward areas.

The Specialist Outpatients Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for assisting Medical and Surgical staff as well as allied health and specialty nurses with consultations and minor procedures, completing assessments, formulating care plans and completing referrals to other health care providers. The RN will be required to collaborate with the multidisciplinary team and provide support, guidance and education to patients and their families to deliver high-quality care.

The Outpatient Department at North Canberra Hospital incorporates the specialties of General Surgery, Gynaecology, ENT, Orthopaedics, Vascular, Lymphedema, Cardiology, General Medicine, Neurology, Renal, Endocrinology, as well as Diabetes Education, Breast Cancer Nurses and Women’s Health Physiotherapy.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Provide excellence in the delivery of patient centered care, utilising the nursing process which reflects the CHS values.
  2. Promote collaboration between the multi-disciplinary team, patients, their families and support network.
  3. Undertake audits, participate in quality improvement and policy and procedure development.
  4. The ability to think critically and utilise problem solving and negotiation skills.
  5. Demonstrated sound verbal and written skills and proficiency with information technology.
  6. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications

Mandatory

  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Minimum of 2 years’ post graduate experience working professionally as a Registered nurse.
  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.
