Position Overview

The Pre-Admission Clinic is part of the Division of Surgery at North Canberra Hospital. Nurses in the Pre-Admission Clinic assess and prepare patients for many specialty groups that include plastic surgery, orthopaedics, vascular, gynaecology, general surgery, ophthalmology, urology, paediatrics, obstetrics, and otolaryngology. Pre-Admission clinic assessments are integral to the patient’s peri-operative journey, safe preparation for surgery and assist in providing a positive patient experience.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Assist with Pre-Admission Clinic in accordance with primary health care principles and practices and the values of CHS. While achieving an agreed standard of direct clinical care to patients.
  2. Accurately assess the health needs of the surgical patient to plan, implement and evaluate interventions in accordance with the policies and clinical practice guidelines of CHS.
  3. Provide timely and effective communication to patients and their families/carers to ensure understanding of care delivery to achieve best practice health outcomes.
  4. Advocate for patients and families/carers by advising, educating and encouraging participation in all stages of continuum of care.
  5. Actively participate in and promote a culture of continuous quality improvement that is evidenced based in accordance with the CHS Quality and Clinical Governance Framework.
  6. Practice in accordance with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council’s code of Professional Conduct, Code of Ethics for Nurses in Australia and relevant, validated professional practice competencies.
  7. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications

Mandatory

  • Relevant Tertiary Nursing Qualification.
  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • A minimum of 2 years clinical experience as a Registered Nurse in an acute care setting.
  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.

  1. Proven experience in providing direct patient care in an acute care surgical setting, for patients of varying complexity, with minimal supervision in a heath environment.
  2. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with the multidisciplinary team, organise work priorities, problem solve and provide nursing leadership to support the continuum of patient care.
  3. Demonstrated high level communication skills and effective computer skills to provide quality customer service.
  4. A proven commitment to professional self-development and education as well as experience in quality improvement activities that promote best professional practice.
  5. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
