Position Overview

Mental Health, Justice Health and Alcohol & Drug Services (MHJHADS) provide health services directly and through partnerships with community organisations. The services provided range from prevention and treatment to recovery, maintenance and harm minimisation. Consumer and carer participation is encouraged in all aspects of service planning and delivery. The Division works in partnership with consumers, carers and a range of government and non-government service providers to ensure the best possible outcomes for clients.

The Division delivers services at a number of locations, including hospital inpatient and outpatient settings, community health centres, detention centres, other community settings including peoples’ homes.

These services include:

* Adult Inpatient Mental Health Services

* Alcohol & Drug Services (ADS)

* Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)

* Justice Health Services (JHS)

Adult Inpatient Mental Health Services is across both The Canberra Hospital (TCH) and North Canberra Hospital (NCH) sites, and includes services such as Adult Mental Health Unit, Ward 12B Mental Health Unit, Mental Health Short Stay Unit, Mental Health Clinical Liaison TCH and NCH, Acacia Mental Health Unit (Acacia) for Acute Adults and Banksia Mental Health Unit (Banksia) for Older Persons.

The combined Registered Nurse 3.1 Mental Health Patient Flow / Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Coordinator role within NCH Mental Health services, leads and supports quality patient health outcomes by ensuring optimal patient flow management and ensuring ECT practice at NCH is safe, efficient, and effective.

All team members are required to undertake professional development and professional supervision, participate in quality initiatives, and contribute to multidisciplinary team processes. The position is supported by a cohesive multi-disciplinary team including the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) Mental Health, two Clinical Nurse Consultants (CNCs), Team Leaders, Shift Team Leaders, After Hours Hospital Managers, and other team members—nursing, medical, allied health, ward support officers, volunteers, patients, families, and the general community.

This position reports to the ADON of NCH Mental Health Services and is a full-time role, worked on a standard five-day work week.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Under limited direction of the ADON, you will perform the role of Registered Nurse Level 3.1 – Mental Health Patient Flow / ECT Coordinator. You will:

  1. Coordinate and deliver patient-centred care related to mental health patient flow and ECT therapy NCH, using evidence-based practices aligned with nursing standards and recovery-oriented frameworks.
  2. Manage ECT scheduling and communication, liaising with clinical teams, theatre and anaesthetics, community and inpatient mental health services, private clinics, general practitioners, the NCH patient flow unit, and other stakeholders.
  3. Oversee resource coordination for patient flow and ECT in collaboration with the Clinical Nurse Consultant and ADON, including staffing, equipment, supplies, discharge planning, education materials, compliance with the Mental Health Act 2015, and attendance at ECT territory- wide meetings.
  4. Provide clinical expertise and leadership, supporting multidisciplinary team processes, engaging with consumers, carers, and external providers, and contributing to discharge planning and continuity of care.
  5. Lead staff education and development in patient flow and ECT practices, in partnership with the Clinical Development Nurse, ensuring alignment with ECT minimum standards and second-stage recovery protocols.
  6. Monitor and report service data, ensuring accurate collection, analysis, and reporting of patient flow and ECT metrics to inform service planning, quality improvement, and executive decision-making.
  7. Support policy development and quality initiatives, ensuring procedures are evidence-based, legislatively compliant, and aligned with CHS values and national mental health standards.
  8. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications

Mandatory

  • A tertiary qualification in nursing.
  • Be registered with the National Nursing and Midwifery Board through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • 6 months experience in a similar role.
  • 5 years full time (8550) worked in direct or indirect roles or completion (inclusive of 7 weeks annual leave per year).    or
  • Completion or a relevant post graduate certificate and 4 years’ (6840) worked in direct or indirect roles.
  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.

Highly Desirable

  • Post Graduate qualification in mental health nursing.
  • Current drivers licence.
  • Experience in either a Mental Health setting, Operating Theatres or directly with ECT.
  • Sound understanding of ECT, patient flow and acute mental health services with proven experience in complex clinical mental health, risk assessment and intervention.
  • Formal education and training of neuro-stimulation/ECT is preferred.
  • Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
  • Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
