Position Overview
The Assistant in Midwifery (AIM) is an integral member of the multidisciplinary team within the Women and Children Division at North Canberra Hospital (NCH). The AIMs primary role is to provide practical support for the Midwifery team. The AIM works under the supervision and direction of the Registered Midwife’s (RM). The AIM performs various non-clinical tasks within the maternity unit.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Restock equipment and packs in all areas of the unit.
- Perform and document daily checks of equipment and stores.
- Strip patient rooms upon discharge and restock rooms.
- Transfer of pathology specimens to the pathology department.
- Assist with transport of patients between areas and on discharge.
- Request service tasks in Digital Health Records (DHR) and report Facilities /Maintenance faults.
- Assist women with personal care.
- May respond to patient call bells.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications
Mandatory
- Completion of the first year of a Bachelor of Midwifery program.
- Current enrolment in a Bachelor of Midwifery program. First year undergraduate Bachelor of Midwifery students may be employed as an AIM if previously gained qualifications and/or experience are deemed equivalent. For example, completion of Cert III Health Services Assistance skills pathway.
- CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.
Highly Desirable
- Demonstrated ability to deliver quality nursing care in accordance with the ANMC National Competency Standards for a Registered Nurse.
- Prior experience as a Nurse Liaison or member of an ICU outreach team will be highly desirable.
- Experience providing leadership to a team and development of a service.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
