Position Overview
The role of Clinical Development Nurse (CDN) is to provide a coordinated and structured approach for nursing education for staff members of the relief pool and casual nurse pool within the Patient Flow Unit (PFU). The PFU CDN works as a member of the PFU Leadership Group to deliver formal, informal and/or opportunistic education to staff, as well as support the development of clinical skills. In addition, this role provides clinical leadership for nursing professional and clinical practice, education and supports management activities. Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Under the limited direction of the NMRO Nurse Manager, you will:
- Support the transition of new nurses into the organisation and nursing workforce, including the preceptorship of new staff.
- Coordinate and deliver the education requirements of for the onboarding of new relief, casual and agency staff.
- Facilitate clinical teaching and assessment of nurses within the clinical workplace, utilising adult learning principles and following CHS nursing practice standards and policies to ensure nurses maintain mandatory learning and required competencies.
- Facilitate the development of clinical in-services to staff in response to identified education requirements and contemporary evidence-based practices and collaborating with CDN’s from all CHS divisions.
- Support staff with day-to-day visits, offering clinical coaching, feedback, and competency assessments and assisting with Performance Development Plans.
- Actively contribute to organisational risk management, implementation of clinical governance activities, quality improvement projects, divisional safety and quality initiatives.
- Demonstrate leadership and autonomy, foster collegial relationships and role model professional behaviours within the workplace and across CHS, promote appropriate customer focused, positive workplace culture and staff wellbeing, as well as demonstrate a commitment to proactively seeking solutions when issues arise.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications
Mandatory
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Minimum years of worked experience required for a Registered Nurse (RN) Level 2 classification at Canberra Health Services (CHS):
- Four (4) years (6840 hours) of post graduate hours of practice worked in direct or indirect roles (inclusive of 7 weeks annual leave per year) OR
- Completion of a relevant post graduate certificate (or working towards) and three (3) years (5130 hours) worked in direct or indirect roles OR
- Minimum of 2 yrs (1978 hours) RN experience if in possession of 2 or more years of prior EN experience within area of specialty OR
- Consideration can be given for exceptional candidates which must be consulted with the relevant DON/M prior to Delegate sign off for the selection process.
- CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.
Highly Desirable
- Relevant post graduate qualifications in clinical nursing practice, and/or nursing education
- Recent experience in an education role and demonstrated competence in assessment and training techniques.
- Up to date with all relevant competencies, mandatory and required education
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

What you Require (Key Selection Criteria)

- Proven knowledge and experience in providing direct nursing care within acute health care settings.
- Proven understanding of adult learning principles and the ability to assist nurses in the assessment of their own learning needs, assimilation of skills and knowledge, and evaluation of outcomes.
- Demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills and ability to communicate and liaise effectively and appropriately with staff, patients and other key stakeholders in a diverse range of situations, including negotiation, consultation and delegation using consistent and transparent processes.
