Position Overview
The Women's and Children's Division within North Canberra Hospital provides Maternity, Neonatal & Gynaecology services to women and their families in the ACT. These services include antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care; Gynaecology care; neonatal special care nursery support and domiciliary care. Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team including a Midwifery and Nursing Team, Medical staff, and Allied Health.
The Nurse/Midwife will provide advanced clinical care to neonates in the Special Care Nursery (SCN). The Nurse/Midwife will have advanced practice knowledge in neonatal practice and the appropriate experience to provide clinical leadership and work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team.
As a Registered Nurse/Midwife Level 1, you will be expected to provide excellent, high level nursing care to babies admitted to the SCN. You will be able to look after critically ill patients, using multiple modalities to support care.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Provide direct patient care within an ethical and professional framework around a Special Care neonatology environment.
- Practice in accordance with the relevant legislation.
- Practice in a way that acknowledges the dignity, culture, values, beliefs & rights of individuals & or groups.
- Advocate for individuals and or groups & their rights for nursing care within the organisational & management structure.
- Understand and practices within own scope of practice.
- Integrate nursing and health care knowledge, skills & attitudes to provide safe & effective nursing care.
- Integrate organisational policy & guidelines with professional standards.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications
Mandatory
- Tertiary Qualification or related qualification in Bachelor of Nursing/Midwifery.
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Registered Nurse/Midwife with a minimum of 1 years’ full-time experience working professionally in a NICU / SCN.
- CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.
Highly Desirable
- Completion (or working towards) post graduate qualifications in neonatal intensive care nursing.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
