Position Overview
The Women and Children Division within North Canberra Hospital primarily provides maternity & gynaecology services to consumers residing in the ACT or surrounding region. Staff working in the in-patient ward (3S) provide care for antenatal and postnatal women (and newborns) as well as for women recovering from general surgery or those that require a hospital admission for medical treatment.
Registered Nurses work within the multidisciplinary team that includes Registered Midwives, Medical Officers, Allied Health Professionals and Hospital Support Staff.
Level 2 RNs are employed on all shifts and contribute to the provision of skilled nursing care that promotes best clinical outcomes for consumers. The Level 2 RN is a clinical leader that supervises and supports the whole team with a focus on support for Level 1 Registered Nurses working in the area. The Level 2 RN works in collaboration with the Level 2 Registered Midwife to ensure that staffing allocation is appropriate and within staffing ratios.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Provision of advanced clinical care
- Apply advanced knowledge and skills in the planning, coordination and provision of nursing care and accepts responsibility for own actions in nursing practice.
Clinical leadership
- Preceptors and mentors. Is a clinical resource for staff
- Functions as a team leader and operates in partnership with the Midwifery team leader and the multidisciplinary team.
Communicates effectively
- Utilises effective interpersonal and written communication skills and works collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team.
Prioritises education
- supports and helps develop Performance Development Plans (PDPs) with Level 1 RNs.
- participates in professional development of self and others and takes responsibility for own professional development.
Quality focus
- has a demonstrated commitment to clinical research, procedure development, clinical auditing and quality improvement process’.
- manages organisational resources appropriately.
- adherence to organisational values.
- prioritises safety in the workplace.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.
Competencies
Ideally the RN will have the following competencies:
- use of Digital Health Record (DHR)
- IV cannulation
- Venipuncture
- PCA care and management
- Insertion of in-dwelling catheter and bladder management
- Perform ECGs
- Surgical drain management

Position Requirements / Qualifications
Mandatory
- Tertiary Qualification in nursing.
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- A minimum 4 years experience as a Registered Nurse.
- CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.
Highly Desirable
- Prior experience of working in a women’s health environment would be highly desirable.
- Prior experience in a team leader role.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
