Position Overview
The Women and Children Division within North Canberra Hospital primarily provides maternity and gynecology services to consumers residing in the ACT and surrounding region. Staff working in the in-patient ward (3S) provide care for antenatal and postnatal women and birthing people, and newborns, as well as for women recovering from general surgery or those that require a hospital admission for medical treatment.
Registered Nurses work within the multidisciplinary team that includes Registered Midwives, Medical Officers, Allied Health Professionals and Hospital Support Staff.
Level 1 RNs are employed on all shifts and contribute to the provision of skilled nursing care that promotes best clinical outcomes for consumers. The Level 1 RN reports to the Level 2 Registered Nurse.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Provision of high-quality clinical care.
- Apply knowledge and skills in the planning, coordination and provision of nursing care to women and newborns.
- Assisting colleagues and the multidisciplinary team in care provision. Uses effective interpersonal communication with consumers, families and colleagues, including the use of ISBAR and documents care provision appropriately in the DHR.Is an active participant in audits and quality improvement projects.
- Adheres to policy and procedure, uses organisational resources appropriately, adheres to organisational values, prioritises safety in the workplace.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.
Competencies
Ideally the RN will have (or be working towards gaining) the following competencies:
- IV cannulation
- Venipuncture
- PCA care and management
- Insertion of in-dwelling catheter and bladder management
- Perform ECGs
- Surgical drain management

Position Requirements / Qualifications
Mandatory
- Tertiary Qualification in nursing.
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- A minimum one years’ work experience as a Registered Nurse.
- CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.
Highly Desirable
- Prior experience of working in a women’s health environment would be highly desirable.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
