Position overview

To be eligible to apply for this position you must be PGY4 +. This position is part-time (0.6 FTE), commencing as soon as possible for 12 months with possible extension.

North Canberra Hospital (formerly Calvary Public Hospital Bruce) and Clare Holland House are now run and operated by Canberra Health Services (CHS). This is a significant milestone as the ACT Government is moving towards delivering a new hospital on Canberra’s Northside.

The new Northside Hospital will be built on the existing North Canberra Hospital (NCH) campus in Bruce. It will be a modern, state-of-the-art hospital for patients, visitors and its workforce and will provide more beds and increased services. Until then, it's business as usual at NCH, and we'll keep providing high-quality care to our patients and community.

HITH NCH is a multidisciplinary inpatient unit providing acute medical care for patients in their own home. It is a progressive unit known for its multidisciplinary approach to patient care.

As the CMO, you will work as part of the HITH multi-disciplinary team assisting consultants with clinical management of patients and applying medical knowledge and experience in the clinical diagnosis, investigation, treatment and ongoing management and appropriate discharge of patients.

Key responsibilities

Under limited direction of consultants and clinical director, you apply medical knowledge and experience in the diagnosis, investigation and treatment of patients who present to the emergency department

  • Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, apply medical knowledge and experience in the diagnosis, investigation and treatment of patients.
  • Maintain effective communication with patients and their relatives, hospital staff, medical colleagues and GPs. Work within personal levels of expertise and seek assistance as required.
  • Ensure effective handover of patients requiring on-going care and monitoring at the end of each shift, including the completion of all discharge summaries.
  • Maintain medical records in accordance with hospital policy and requirements.
  • Participate in Department teaching / audit administrative duties as required.
  • Provide clinical support for all staff members of the HITH Service including but not limited to more junior medical officers and nursing staff
  • Maintain effective communication with patients and their relatives, hospital staff, medical colleagues, general practitioners and other community care providers to ensure the best provision of care, education and effective handover of ongoing patients care.
  • Ensure medical records are appropriately updated and with the HITH senior medical staff ensure cost-effective use and wise stewardship of hospital resources
  • Contribute to quality assurance and/or research activities within the unit to fulfill training/CPD requirements.
  • Ability to work a shift work roster which may include some evenings, public holidays and weekends.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • An Australian MBBS medical degree or equivalent.
  • Full registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).

  • Pre-employment National Police Check.
  • Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
  • Comply with Canberra Health Services Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC) credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for medical professionals.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.
