Position overview

North Canberra Hospital are seeking a Emergency Career Medical Officer to join our growing emergency department. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will apply medical knowledge and experience in the diagnosis, investigation and treatment of patients who present to the emergency department. You will continue to work clinically whilst taking on a liaison and coordination role for the CMO workforce. You will be provided with some administration time and a suitable space. (minimum 4 hours / fortnight)

Key responsibilities

Under limited direction consultants and clinical director, you apply medical knowledge and experience in the diagnosis, investigation and treatment of patients who present to the emergency department

  1. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, apply medical knowledge and experience in the diagnosis, investigation and treatment of patients.
  2. Maintain effective communication with patients and the relatives, hospital staff, medical colleagues and GPs. Work within personal levels of expertise and seek assistance as required.
  3. Ensure effective handover of patients requiring on-going care and monitoring at the end of each shift, including the completion of all discharge summaries.
  4. Maintain medical records in accordance with hospital policy and requirements.
  5. Coordinate CMO views on strategy and direction for the department.
  6. Participate in development +/- delivery of CMO education program for NCH ED.
  7. Be an advocacy point for CMO issues with rostering / workflows / interactions etc.
  8. Participate in Department teaching / audit administrative duties as required.
  9. Ability to work a 24/7 shift work roster which will include some nights, public holidays and weekends.
  10. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Full registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Ability to work a 24/7 shift work roster which will include some nights, public holidays and weekends.
  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.
  • Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

  • Pre-employment National Police Check.
