Applications are sought for suitable ICU Senior registrars post successful completion of the College of Intensive Care Medicine criteria to enter Transition year, for the 2026 Training Program for one year with possible extension.

North Canberra Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit is a tertiary level, mixed adult Intensive Care admitting over 600 patients a year.  The ICU is accredited by the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) for foundation training (application submitted for C6).

Our intensive care trainees are exposed to a broad case mix of critically ill patients. There are 10 physical bed spaces currently with a plan to construct a new hospital in the next 5 years. A Transition Year Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine plays a key role in the delivery of medical care to critically ill patients. The position is a transitional role between that of Registrar and Consultant, with flexibility and graded responsibility to allow increasing clinical autonomy, and development of skills in research, education and administration.

We offer a structured teaching program tailored for the needs of the individual advanced trainee while providing support from Staff Specialists experienced in the practice of Intensive Care Medicine.

It is expected that all appointees will be registered with the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) and will have completed the CICM Part 2 examination and all other rotational requirements necessary to be eligible for the TY including submission of formal project.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following under limited direction of the Clinical Director you will:

  1. Provide competent and efficient clinical management of patients of Canberra Health Services under the supervision and direction of (a) Specialist Medical Practitioner(s). The clinical management includes acute admissions, in-patient care, attendance and participation in the Medical Emergency Team, inter-disciplinary consults and clinical handover;
  2. Participate in the consultant on call roster first on call, with cover by a non-clinical consultant colleague.
  3. Participate in the supervision, training and professional development of ICU junior medical staff, ICU nursing staff, and medical students. Maintain the education roster of tutorials, journal club and CICM exam preparation sessions. Participation in cross-territory educational activities and courses open to external applicants is encouraged.
  4. Contribute to quality assurance activities such as clinical audit, and participate in changes that improve quality and safety of patient care such as reviewing and updating policies and procedures;
  5. Attend senior staff meetings, lead the orientation day for new JMOs each term, and where possible, have a role in the recruitment process, in order to be actively involved in the broader governance of Intensive Care;
  6. The possibility of secondment to the Division Director for Critical Care services and the Director of Medical Services, to learn more about the management structure of North Canberra hospital.
  7. Comply with the policies and requirements of the Medical Board of Australia and the policies of Canberra Health Services. This includes the promotion and application of workplace relations, workplace equity and diversity and workplace safety, and completion of mandatory training; and
  8. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications

Mandatory

  • Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Completed all training requirements with exception of the Management Skills course with the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (CICM).
  • Late state CICM trainee eligible to enter transition year training, including fellowship exam and formal project submission.
  • Airway competent.
  • Competent in ICU procedures.
  • Able to independently manage ICU patients with appropriate support from supervising intensivist.
  • Experience managing an ICU clinical team.
  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.

Desirable

Please note prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:

  • Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.

  • Current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.
  • Comply with Canberra Health Services Credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for medical professionals.
