Position overview

The Department of Neurology and Stroke at North Canberra Hospital is seeking an unaccredited neurology registrar who is focused on the delivery of high quality, effective, patient-centric care.

The neurology registrar will contribute to the neurology and stroke service by undertaking care of both inpatients and outpatients under the supervision of the consultant neurologists in the department. The registrar will run a rapid-access, category 1 clinics, including a TIA/stroke clinic and general neurology clinic. Participation in neurology clinics including EEG and NCS may be possible upon discussion and agreement with the head of department and the organisation.

It is expected that the registrar will participate in 2-3 outpatient clinics per week including sub specialty clinics and in addition, the registrar will contribute to the out-of-hours, on-call roster for neurology and stroke in 1:4 roster. These on-call duties include assessment and management of acute stroke patients who may require acute therapy (thrombolysis and assess suitability for endovascular clot retrieval) and undertaking ward rounds on weekends, suitable support by the on-call consultant will be provided.

The registrar will gain experience in management of stroke and assessment and selection of patients for acute therapy and endovascular clot retrieval. The registrar will obtain exposure and training in advanced imaging for acute stroke and will become confident in the interpretation of multimodal CT (CTA and CTP) and MRI. The registrar will also gain experience in management of complex neurology patient care, both inpatient and outpatients.

Department will provide education, support and training for the registrar to gain experience in neurology and if the applicant is motivated to do formal neurology advanced training, then support will be provided to the registrar.

There will also be the opportunity for the registrar to participate in research projects in neurology.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Under limited direction of the senior registrar you will perform assessment and specialized care of neurology patients. You will:

1. Daily ward rounds.
2. Participation in the on-call neurology and stroke including acute stroke roster, 1 in 4 weeks.
3. Diagnosis and management of acute stroke patients using multimodality imaging, assessing eligibility for IV thrombolysis and/or endovascular clot retrieval.
4. 2-3 weekly outpatient clinics including sub speciality clinics.
5. Teaching of medical students, junior medical staff, Basic Physician Trainees and nursing/allied health staff, as required. Academic title with the ANU is optional.
6. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organization.

Competencies

Specific competencies include but are not limited to the following.

• Daily ward rounds.
• Participation in the on-call neurology roster including acute stroke.
• Diagnosis and management of acute stroke patients using multimodality imaging, assessing eligibility for IV thrombolysis and/or endovascular clot retrieval.
• 2-3 weekly outpatient clinics, subspecialty clinics.
• Participation in research and multicentre clinical trials if any.
• Teaching of medical students, junior medical staff, Basic Physician Trainees and nursing/allied health staff, as required. Academic title with the ANU is optional.

Qualifications

Essential

• Be registered or be eligible for unconditional registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
• High level communication and interpersonal skills with a strong commitment to teaching at all levels (including medical, nursing and allied health professional staff).
• Experience in clinical neurology and motivated to complete training in clinical neurology as an advanced trainee.
• The successful applicant will need to be for weekend and after-hours work.

Desirable

• Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
• Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.

Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:

• Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.
• Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
• Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
• Comply with Canberra Health Services Credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for medical professionals.
