Position overview

The North Canberra Hospital is a 256 bed hospital that offers both acute and subacute services. Our model of care sees multidisciplinary teams working collaboratively to provide a high quality of patient care.

The Medical Imaging department supports the hospital in the provision of an extensive range of medical, surgical, maternity and 24 hour emergency services. The department also offers a service to the general public through private referrals from GP and specialist clinics.

The Medical Imaging department offers a continuous 24 hour service for CT and X-ray, including weekend and public holiday shifts (penalty rates apply). We operate two CT scanners and two general x-ray rooms, including fluoroscopy, mobile radiography and theatre fluoroscopy.

MI3 radiographers are expected to perform an efficient high quality person-centred imaging service, including all general X-ray modalities and CT. MI3 radiographers are expected to participate in professional development activities as well as the provision of clinical supervision to subordinate staff and students.

Key responsibilities

Under broad direction of the Deputy Director Medical Imaging, you will be accountable for the provision of a high quality, efficient person-centered imaging service. You will:

  • Perform CT, general, mobile, and theatre radiography examinations, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely imaging in accordance with professional standards, hospital protocols, and the Radiation Safety Management Plan.
  • Apply professional judgement and autonomy in the justification and optimisation of imaging, maintaining radiation exposures as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) and prioritising patient safety.
  • Deliver person-centred care through effective communication, ensuring patient understanding, comfort, and informed consent throughout the imaging process.
  • Collaborate effectively with radiologists, medical officers, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams to support optimal clinical outcomes and efficient service delivery.
  • Demonstrate clinical leadership by acting as a senior point of reference and providing guidance and decision support on imaging procedures.
  • Provide supervision, teaching, and support to junior radiographers and students, contributing to their clinical development and performance.
  • Participate in quality improvement, audit, and research activities, and contribute to clinical governance, including documentation, incident reporting, and compliance requirements.
  • Undertake rostered duties across a 24/7 service, including weekends, evenings, and night shifts, and maintain ongoing professional development to meet role requirements.

Qualifications

Specific requirements include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Medical Radiations
  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Medical Radiation Practitioner.
  • Hold, or be eligible to hold, an ACT Radiation License.

  • Minimum of five years recent experience including Computed Tomography.
