Position overview

North Canberra Hospital (NCH) Pharmacy sits within the Division of Allied Health, Ambulatory and Palliative Care and comprises a highly functioning and friendly team of approximately 45 staff – pharmacists, technicians and administrative staff. Currently, the department provides clinical pharmacy services using a complete digital health record to various specialty areas including critical care, emergency care, coronary care, stroke/neurology, general medicine, general surgery, palliative care, maternity, mental health, pre-admission clinic, hospital in the home, as well as dispensary and non-sterile manufacturing services. We also offer a pharmacy residency program, and a wide range of teaching opportunities. Over the next two years we plan to develop our services to include Partnered Pharmacist Medication Charting (PPMC), enhanced use of technologies and automation, extended scope pharmacy technician roles and further development of the clinical pharmacy workforce. This position provides pharmacy graduates with the opportunity to obtain provisional pharmacist registration, complete supervised practice, and undertake a comprehensive intern training program. The program is designed to develop the clinical knowledge and practical skills required for competent practice as a pharmacist with general registration in a hospital setting.

The Pre-Registration Pharmacist will rotate through multiple service areas across NCH and contribute to the quality use of medicines and optimal patient care through the delivery of pharmacy services under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.

The Pre-Registration Pharmacist is responsible for meeting the requirements set by the Pharmacy Board of Australia (PBA), their Intern Training Program Provider, and the NCH Pharmacy Department.

In fulfilling these clinical and professional responsibilities, the Pre-Registration Pharmacist is expected to align with and actively support the vision, mission, and values of the NCH Pharmacy Department.

Key responsibilities

Under general direction from the Clinical Pharmacist – Education, Training and Workforce Development, you will work closely with a team of dedicated and skilled technicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare practitioners, to deliver a safe, efficacious and patient centred pharmacy service across NCH.

Under supervision of a registered Pharmacist, you will:

  1. Provide a clinical pharmacy service following the Advanced Pharmacy Australia Clinical Pharmacy Standards. This includes but is not limited to; admission medication history and reconciliation, review of medication orders to ensure clarity, validity and appropriateness, therapeutic drug monitoring, assessment and ongoing monitoring of medication management, discharge planning and facilitation, participation in clinical decision-making and provision of medicines information to patients and health professionals.
  2. Dispense individual prescriptions for inpatients, outpatients and patients on discharge including the preparation of non-sterile extemporaneous pharmaceuticals using established principles, techniques and methods.
  3. Assist with the receipt, storage and distribution of pharmaceuticals and maintain accurate records in the process.
  4. Participate in the department’s quality improvement projects, health promotion activities, educational programs, and research activities.
  5. Promote at every opportunity, quality use of medicines principles, ensuring correct prescribing, and compliance with Drugs and Therapeutics Committee endorsed prescribing restrictions and protocols.
  6. Participate in the NCH pre-registration training program, CHS Allied Health New Graduate Interprofessional Program and other designated educational activities such as the attendance and contribution to clinical pharmacist meetings as rostered
  7. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.
  8. Participate in weekend and after-hours work as needed according to the departmental roster.

Qualifications

Specific requirements include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Relevant Tertiary Qualification in Pharmacy.
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a provisional pharmacist
  • Eligible to enrol in an Intern Training Program accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council.
