Position Overview

The Social Work and Psychology Department is a contemporary evidence-based service providing high quality inpatient and outpatient care at North Canberra Hospital. The Department provides care and support to patients and families across critical and acute inpatient areas and specialised outpatients settings, including medical and surgical areas, intensive care unit, the emergency department, maternity and hospital in the home.

As team leader Medical and Surgical you will provide clinical leadership, supervision of and guidance to your social work team to provide a high-quality social work service to medical and surgical patients of North Canberra Hospital. You will have day to day oversight of your team, providing support and specialist clinical advice, problem solving, education and intervention. You will hold a small case load providing social work assessment and psychosocial interventions.

You will form an integral part of the Social Work and Psychology Department leadership team, supporting the management and development of the Department. You will be required to oversee professional development and supervision, promote and have opportunities to participate in quality improvement and research initiatives.

Clinical supervision and professional development are provided through team and department structures and informal and formal professional development opportunities are available.

Note: This position(s) may be required to participate in on call rosters, including weekends and to work Christmas shutdown periods. This duty statement outlines a range of possible duties that staff are expected to perform at this level. The emphasis placed on each duty will vary according to the requirements of each position.

Key responsibilities

Under limited direction of the Director, you will perform a leadership role within the social work and psychology department and deliver social work duties including provision of high level clinical social work and clinical oversight and support to social workers within the Department. You will:

  1. Perform specialised psychosocial interventions and provide specialist advice to social workers to conduct complex psychosocial interventions across a range of clinical areas, including individual and group work to patients and carers.
  2. Demonstrate leadership and exercise independent professional judgment and employ innovative problem-solving skills to manage complex cases where principles, procedures and techniques require expansion, adaptation or modification.
  3. Provide leadership and clinical oversight of a social work team, facilitate stakeholder in-services and meetings, coordinate case reviews and oversee the completion of clinical and administrative data collection and evaluation to a high standard.
  4. Liaise with the patient, carers, multi-disciplinary team members and key internal and external stakeholders: to enhance and establish effective and collaborative partnerships to ensure positive client outcomes.
  5. Provide leadership in the ongoing development of the service, including quality improvement, policy development, evaluation and review and contribute to research to support evidence-based practice.
  6. Practice in accordance with the professional body’s code of conduct, i.e: The Australian Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics and the SOPs or Clinical Practice guidelines of the Social Work Department.
  7. Actively participate in supervision, provide clinical supervision and specialist training to staff and students as required, promote professional development and participate in performance management for self and others.
  8. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications

Mandatory

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in social work or equivalent.
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience working professionally as a social worker, preferably with health experience.
  • Computer literacy skills.
  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.

  3. Demonstrated critical self-reflection and active participation in professional supervision and provide clinical supervision to professional staff and students.
  4. Demonstrated initiative in undertaking innovative quality improvement activities through policy review, quality improvement processes and research to develop evidence-based practice.
