Position Overview

The Medical Imaging department at NCH supports the hospital in the provision of an extensive range of medical, surgical, maternity and 24 hour emergency services. The department also offers a service to the general public through private referrals from GP and specialist clinics.

The Ultrasound department runs a 24 hour service including weekend and public holiday shifts, and on call service outside core hours (penalty rates apply). The department has four ultrasound rooms and sonographers work collaboratively to provide high quality diagnostic scans and maintain sonographer health and safety. The predominant workload is general, small parts, obstetric and gynaecologic scans and training can be offered to successful candidates where required.

Duties

Under limited direction of the Deputy Director Medical Imaging (Ultrasound) you will:

1. Perform high quality diagnostic ultrasound examinations, based on industry guidelines and informed by evidence based practice at the North Canberra Hospital.
2. Exercise independent professional judgement to perform detailed, novel and critical ultrasound examinations for inpatients and outpatients, including assisting interventional procedures.
3. Maintain a high standard of clinical practice by participating in ongoing professional and organisational education and training, quality assurance, and research.
4. Participate in training and mentoring of existing and new staff and students including Sonographers, Registrars and other health professionals as directed.
5. Participate in research and quality improvement projects to enhance patient and staff outcomes, including maintaining clinical standards and protocols for ultrasound.
6. Participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Control programs. Maintain appropriate records of procedures and comply with state and organisational policies.
7. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications

Mandatory

• Relevant tertiary qualifications in Medical Ultrasound.
• Registration (or eligibility for registration) with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR).
• The successful applicant will need to be available for weekend, public holiday and out of hours on-call roster.
• CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.

• Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
• Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.

• Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.

• Comply with CHS credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for allied health professionals.

What you Require (Key Selection Criteria)

1. Proven ability to perform diagnostic ultrasounds independently, applying sound knowledge of anatomy and physiology for interpretation of the results using evidence based practice and department protocols.
2. Proven ability to maintain high standards of quality, accuracy, and safety for all ultrasound investigations and to initiate quality improvement projects.
3. Demonstrated high level organisation, communication, and interpersonal skills, including a proven ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.
4. Desire to work in a public hospital environment including participating in training and mentoring student Sonographers and other health professionals in ultrasound training programmes.
5. Demonstrated understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
