Position overview

The Division of Surgery is responsible for delivering inpatient and outpatient surgical services. The Division includes Surgical Bookings and Pre-Admission Clinic, Anaesthesia, Pain Management Unit, Operating Theatres, Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit, Day Surgery Unit, Admissions, Day Procedure Unit, Endoscopy, and specialist surgical ward areas.

Surgical Bookings Clerks are responsible for scheduling surgical procedures and pre-admission appointments, liaising with patients and carers as well as maintaining Surgical Waiting Lists. The role works closely with Surgical Liaison Nurses and the ADON of Surgical Scheduling.

Key responsibilities

  1. Manage the surgical waiting lists of surgeons in accordance with ACT Health Surgical Access Policy
  2. Booking of theatre lists in accordance with ACT Health Surgical Access Policy and in consultation with surgeons, anaesthetists and theatre management
  3. Data input from the Request for Information in accordance with CHS Elective Surgical Access Policy
  4. Maintaining up to date personal information for all patients awaiting surgery
  5. Liaise with patients and provide accurate information and assistance regarding waiting times and booking of procedures
  6. Regular auditing of surgical waiting lists in accordance with ACT Health Surgical Access Policy
  7. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

  1. Sound knowledge of surgical waiting list and theatre booking management or the ability to acquire this quickly.
  2. Sound computer skills in the Microsoft Office package with accurate data recording skills.
  3. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with surgeons, nurses, patients and colleagues and ability to prioritise workloads and meet timeframes.
  4. Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and sound knowledge of medical terminology.
  5. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
